Searching ... say what?

I have 'Searching' in big white letters at the bottom of my screen (where it says you're hungry, DTrap etc.. I pressed the wrong buttons somehow on the keyboard.

Dunno how I did it, don't know how to get rid of it. It's not really an issue but how can I rid myself of this?

Hit 'S' (that's shift-s) to toggle search mode on and off. All it does, I think, is make you move twice as slowly so you're more likely to notice secret doors, traps, etc. It turns itself off when you get disturbed (e.g. by seeing a monster).

Not in vanilla. In NPP, kill x monster quests, sometimes.

Yeah I'm playing vanilla, clearly didn't realise it existed and have no plans to use it any time soon.

Don't think I've ever used it in Vanilla. Usually you can spot the points where secret doors would be and just tunnel into the square instead.

I use it relatively frequently prior to finding detect doors/stairs, especially when I'm early on a level and run into a situation where I have no doors and no obvious places to look (like getting dropped into a room with no exit).
