    Angband 4.0.2 released

Angband 4.0.2 is now available for Windows, OS X or as source - the site will update fairly soon, but as usual I'm too impatient for that.

Like 4.0.1, this is mostly a bugfix, but with a few other improvements (notably Elsairon's work on monster spell messages). There are still some potential issues with sound, and I'm far from convinced that I've eradicated all crash bugs, so please report failures. I'm hoping that 4.0.3 will (if needed) be quite a while away - and saying that probably ensures that it will be required within a week because of a game-breaking bug. We'll see

    The changelist:

    Changes:
    • New monster spell messages - thanks Elsairon
    • Put subwindow options in a separate file so they work for all characters
    • Order quiver ammo from worst to best
    • Make resting and statusline display for deep descent work like for recall

    Bugfixes:
    • Stop wrong timed effect happening
    • Make cheating death work
    • Make monster lore saving always work
    • Correct melee hit chance calculation
    • Make artifact knowledge show correctly
    • Fix starlight effect (plus some other potential projection issues)
    • Make monster lore save properly after probing
    • Give correct path to tiles in the SDL port
    • Stop monsters shooting other monsters
    • Calculate timed effects (notably temporary resists) properly
    • Limit visual updates during running and resting, speeding these up
    • Track the equipment count correctly
    • Stop the charges from a destroyed device being deducted twice
    • Small changes to build system to work better for servers and BSD
    • Improve bounds checking for grids, preventing some crashes
    • Make the quiver command symbol appear in help file display
    • Fix lack of artifacts
    • Several other minor code improvements

Stop monsters shooting other monsters is a bug? I liked this feature. It is fun to learn that monsters are not resistant to Nether (after one got hit by Nether hounds). And I can use all the help I can get in the dungeons.

Where? The rephial.org site still shows 4.0.1 on the download button. Or maybe I've just jumped the gun and it's still compiling?

          Thanks Nick, you the man!

I've just downloaded, and am midway through a game with, the breath cone feature release. Am I missing much if I stick with this for now rather than upgrading to 4.0.2?

I've noticed the new monster messages ('You hear a twang' is my favourite, although 'You hear a hushing roar' - or whatever the darkness breath is - is a little odd!) and the 'descent' status is in, but are there any serious bugfixes between the two?

Oh, and 'You repel a sudden bleariness.' is marvellous!

And I don't even know what 'Your body pulsates briefly.' is supposed to be telling me, but I love it anyway.

Yes, rephial is a bit slow to update, which is why I posted the links in the announcement. Simply click the appropriate link for your operating system, and the game will appear on your computer by the magic of the internet

Nothing - the only difference (aside from the feature changes, obviously) is the version number.

It really shouldn't, but I have no clue what else would either. Let us know if you see this sort of thing again, and in what circumstances.

Rephial is up to date now, btw.

Yes, I too have seen my @ move around across the screen, but I forget what else was happening at the time.

Randart "Based on xxx" has changed

The randarts spolier used to state per item e.g. "Based on Deathwreaker" but now only contains "Based on <another randart name>" which is far less interesting. The referred item will be totally unknown nearly all of the time.
                            Is this intended?

No, this is a side effect of the fact that randarts are generated from the previous set, not the standarts. That is really a bug, and I may do a fix for it for 4.0.3 if and when that happens, but randarts need to be overhauled anyway for 4.1. So we'll see what happens.
