I used to save acquirement scrolls for lv99 but the amount of poop I got doing that I just read them as soon as I get them now. Maybe I just have bad luck with acquirement scrolls.
So in addition to getting a Hard Leather Cap of Wisdom, you get a Dagger of Slay Troll and a Small Metal Shield of Resist Cold.
IMO we should replace Acquirement scrolls with fancy chests (golden or jeweled or something) which generate contents based on (level chest was created on + 20). No need to save them for later, and the level boost is far more likely to make a useful item than the "guaranteed excellent or better" aspect of Acquirement scrolls.
Personally, I think it would be fun if we stole an idea from Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup: when you use an acquirement scroll, you get a choice of items and you pick one (maybe *Acquirement* generates a larger list, or lets you choose multiple items). I feel like generating 5 guaranteed excellent or better means you will very often have something useful, especially at early depths. Also ID's the runes on the items you pick from, as an extra bonus (so that you know what the items are).

Since we're playing fantasy vanilla, how about a stick or twist? The item pops up for one second and one second only. You can hit space to accept at any point. There are 10 items on the menu. If you don't stick at any point then you receive the tenth item.

IMHO this breaks immersion too much.
