An interesting thing happened: I removed all the game files and re-downloaded the game. I didn't pay attention to where I downloaded it (it ended up in my dropbox) and I began finding artifacts! I realized where I downloaded it and moved the game files to my "Documents" (I use an imac) where the game usually was at. Didn't discover any artifacts despite high lvl feelings (a few 5s and 6s and an 8) and nothing on those levels to merit the high rating. When I moved the files back to dropbox, I began finding artifacts again.

Previously, I said that my first character with 4.0.1 found artifacts until I dove to the 90s. But, now, I remember that around that time, I also realized the "angband" file was in my dropbox and not my documents...and I moved the file.

Could there be a reason that artifacts disappear depending on the location of the game files?

I'm confused too! I can't think of any other explanation...maybe I've offended the gods somehow

I'm pretty sure that all that's going on here is that humans are really good at finding patterns in randomness. And I can see no reason why artifact rarities should have changed. And I guess the people who are finding more artifacts than they expect aren't posting to this thread...

Having said that, I will keep it in mind, because just having said it means I'll probably turn out to be wrong

Probably worth saying, then, that I'm having no problems with artifact drop rate at all (playing on Windows).

Probably a stupid comment, but could this have anything to do with issues some people are having with artifact memory?

I sometimes think the artifact drop rate is quite low even when trolling at DL 98, then I think it's probably just scotoma, "the mind sees what it wants to see". But then my mind really wants to see artifacts, so I'm screwing up the scotoma too!

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Over several characters/games I am finding more artifacts than I did in 3.4.1. At one point I was I was practically drowning in them at around 2700': mostly weapons when i didn't need a weapon upgrade.

actually, i'm experiencing the same. 3 million turns, DL33, practically no diving (used one DD on DL5), ran several levels multiple times. I'm also playing with preserve on, so no chance of missing any.
At this time i have found two artifacts, one dropped, one on the floor.

I usually finish in around 100K player turns +/- 20K). I find roughly 50 artifacts every game. Note that nearly all those artifacts come after 2000'.
