No/Few Artifacts in V4?

Been playing V4 and now V4.01 and I'm just not seeing artifacts like I used to. Saw 4 in V4 and then nothing, even spending many hours on the bottom floors. This is with randarts on.

Is there a bug or a big change going on?

Never once ever seen the notification there was an artifact on the floor in the feelings section either.

Certainly not an intentional change - in fact the intention is no gameplay change from 3.5.1. There have been a few oddities noticed about randarts, but nothing on the scale you're suggesting. Is this over more than one character? If not, it's possible you just got a strange set of randarts, I guess.

You won't get a notification unless you play with preserve mode off. Your best bet is to kill uniques or clear vaults with "special" spots.

Probably a stupid question, and apologies if so, but...you're not playing with the 'Restrict Creation Of Artifacts' option 'On', are you?

Since we're on the subject of artifacts, I'll put this here. Looks like there is a bug with the artifact knowledge screen. It is only reporting artifacts that I currently have equipped - no others are listed.

This is definitely a bug. It looks to me like artifacts carried or equipped by the player and known artifacts on the current level are shown, but past artifacts or artifacts in the home are not, and all artifacts are shown correctly in the player history. Is that what you're seeing?

Yes, that is EXACTLY what I am seeing. If an artifact is at home, it is not shown. Dropping it outside the door of the home allows it to show up. And everything else you say!

Deleted my entire game folder, and downloaded and unzipped a fresh copy.

My third game playing, a number of hours in, now on turn 1069360, level 23 high elf ranger -- no artifacts ever seen.

My settings are normal, the only thing of note is rand arts is yes.

I can verify this too with the release 4.0.1 version. Left behind an artifact dagger which I no longer needed, descended, and memory of it is gone. I'm also using randarts.

I'm observing this behavior while playing 4.0.1 with the regular set of artifacts, actually.

I am almost embarrassed to ask this question but, alas, I am a n00b...

How do I know if I have found an artifact? What text/color/symbol signifies that? (version 4.0.1)

(Then again, I have only made it down to level 29 of the dungeon so I might not have gone deep enough).

Hey, you need never be embarassed about asking anything on this forum!

Artifacts will identify themselves as 'The Something Of Such-and-such' as soon as you pick them up (e.g. 'The Phial of Galadriel'). They also have {special} appended to their description before they are ID'd.

And they tend to start turning up in the dlvl30's - although they can be found on dlvl1, of course...

Just started playing again after a brief hiatus and very excited about 4.0.1. However, I'm experiencing the same with my current and previous 4 or 5 characters all using randarts. My first character (who died at Sauron's hands) on 4.0.1 played with the usual artifacts but stopped finding them around dlvl 70 when I dove to the 90s...found a bunch of vaults but no artifacts.

Has anyone found a work around or should I just restrict artifacts and practice my hardcore gaming?

I'm starting to think Artifacts are rare at the deeper levels at 4.0.1. Just cleared a bubble vault at DL87 and found 1 artifact.
Overall, playing randarts and haven't found a single art launcher yet, 2 armors, 2 shields, 1 glove, 1 boots, 3 lights, 2 amulets, 2 rings and a fair number of weapons. This seems a bit light.
As a mage, had a tough run getting the dungeon books - got Raals early, but had seen all the priest books before getting the next mage book.
