    The Witch-King of Angmar

This dude is supposed to be at home at level 80. I've only dived to about level 72, 75, somewhere in there. At some point, I've reset my recall depth, and I'm no longer sure - but I KNOW that I haven't dived beyong 75.

This bad boy has been waiting for me four times now, this time on level 68. He snatches me off the floor like a bad puppy, shakes the life out of me, and throws me to the other end of the dungeon. He PLAYS with me!

Is he, or is he not, immune to acid, lightning, etc?

I've looked at several cheats on him, and I'm a bit confused. This is what mon-info.spo says in my .angband folder on my machine, which conflicts with the data found here: http://angband.oook.cz/monsters.php?...-king&t=&s=&v=

    [U] The Witch-King of Angmar (Purple 'W')
    === Num:535 Lev:80 Rar:3 Spd:+20 Hp:6000 Ac:144 Exp:60000
The Chief of the Ringwraiths. A fell being of devastating power. His
spells are lethal and his combat blows crushingly hard. He moves at
speed, and commands legions of evil to do his bidding. It is said that he
is fated never to die by the hand of mortal man.
This evil undead creature is normally found at depths of 4000 feet (level
80), and moves very quickly. He may carry up to 6 objects or treasures.
He resists bright light and rock remover, and does not resist acid,
lightning, fire, cold, poison, water, nether, plasma, nexus, or
disenchantment. He is fairly observant of intruders, which he may notice
from 900 feet. He may appear with other monsters. He may cast spells
which produce nether balls (230), produce mana bolts (330), cause brain
smashing (180), cause critical wounds (150), terrify, blind, paralyze,
teleport away, summon similar monsters, summon monsters, summon greater
undead, summon ancient dragons, summon greater demons, or summon
ringwraiths; 1 time in 2. He can hit to attack with damage 10d10, hit to
attack with damage 10d10, hit to lower experience with damage 7d7, and hit
to lower experience with damage 7d7.

Oh - I didn't mention that I have Glaurung wandering around this same dungeon. I just got tele'd AGAIN by the Witch-king, and I've just walked into Glaurung, who I TO'd out of there awhile back. He's pretty mean too . . . .

Monsters can appear earlier than their rated depths. They have to pass "out of depth" checks, which makes them less likely to appear, but it's far from impossible especially deeper in the dungeon where such checks are easier to pass. Early on, you're very unlikely to see, say, a Snaga at 100' even though that's only a few levels out of depth.

But even ignoring that, vaults are coded to allow generation of monsters as if you were much deeper in the dungeon. At the most extreme, certain tiles in vaults can generate monsters from 2000' (40 levels) deeper in the dungeon. So once you've reached 2750', you can start seeing monsters from any depth in the game except for Sauron and Morgoth (the next deepest is Gothmog at 4750').

        monster info

Do you Play on a machine with offers the Option to use a sub-window and Display the Monster recall Information there?

For me this Information was always accurate, since it is in-game and most-likely always up-to-date.
        Blondes are more fun!

          Monster recall window . . . . let me try to set that up . . . .

YES!!!! You're a life saver!! The Witch-king doesn't show up in that window right now - I've got the Jabberwock in it now. I just TO'd him somewhere - which makes THREE baddies looking for me on this level.

I'm getting near the end of this little killing field, maybe I'll actually be able to finish it out!

Let me try to get a screenshot up . . .

Well - I reached the end of that vault - and I only had to TO the witch-king one more time. He is persistent, keeps coming back after me!

Time for word-of-recall, and then save the game. I've had enough for today!

AFAIK no monster is immune to any form of damage. However, most high level uniques resist the 4 basic elemental damage types and have tons of hitpoints. For example, if you hit him for 100 acid damage with some spell, resistance cuts that down to 1/3 (I assume it works the same way for monsters as for the player?) so he just took 33 damage, the witchking has 6000 hitpoints, so he is technically not immune to your acid bold but in practice it's not going to really hurt him.

I think all undeads are immune to nether. As in truly immune, it doesn't do anything to them, and I think breathers are immune to their respective elements, balance dragon doesn't get damaged by sound or time hound by time and so on. Not sure about the latter case though.

Monsters can have elemental immunities. I think this doesn't actually completely eliminate damage -- if you hit an unhurt red dragon with a firebolt, for example, their healthbar will turn yellow -- but it does so little damage that it's not worth bothering with.

Undead and nether might be a special exception where they actually do take zero damage. I admit to never having checked.

As an aside, for some reason giant gold dragon flies are immune to fire. Why?

Maybe its old AD&D 2nd edition lore. The "good" chromatic dragons were associated with both a traditional element and a new one, giving them 2 breathweapons and immunities and thus, politically correct, making them more powerfull than their evil counterparts. Gold dragons were associated with fire and poison gas iirc.

Now gold dragons and dragonlings themselves are not fire immune (are they ?), so who knows what exactly happened there.

Yay! I killed the witch-king. Found a rather large vault, oval shaped, divided in half top to bottom, with a zillion traps in it. Struggled to get through the bottom half, and considered just giving up. Ehhh - I just tele'd myself out, rested for & turns, and came back.

Got inside that top half, killed a couple wights, then a nightmare, I think. Witch king came out from behind something, and proceeded to stomp a mud hole in my arse. I tele'd out, and surprisingly found myself just a short distance from the vault.

Look monsters two or three times, and here he comes, along with a nightmare and a couple winged horrors.

WK arrived first, and I was in position to range him. Got him down to a single dot on his life bar, and he ran, leaving me to face the nightmaire and horrors. They ranged easily enough, and I chased after the disappearing WK. Shot that coward in the back, I did!

All that bother, and all I got was a long sword of extra attacks. Crappy stats, so I dropped it.

One more unique I won't have to face in the sub-basements!!
