Back in the days when Polymorph Other could generate any non-unique monster, I used to spend absurd amounts of time in the town turning townsfolk into nasties and then killing them. I think I got a Holy Avenger dagger from a great wyrm in the town once.
(This was not the brightest strategy in the world for any number of reasons, but hell, I didn't know that, and I was having fun) -

It only generates monsters of similar level to the target monster. Which means that when you polymorph townspeople, you just get giant white centipedes, small kobolds, grey mushroom patches, etc. I don't think you get other townspeople, strangely enough. But it's been ages since I tried.Comment
