Missing display options?

Hi all,

I've been hanging out on the fringes of Angband (and general rogue like), gaming for quite a while, dipping my feet in periodically. I traditionally prefer NetHack, but every so often come back to Angband.

I also happen to be totally blind. One of the things that makes difficult is getting a picture of what's surrounding my character. In older versions, there was a section of display options, which included, among other things, the option to highlight things with the cursor.

Is this just totally gone now? I can't seem to find it. The game is much harder to play without being able to keep reliable track of my @ sign. Any input appreciated.

There is a "Highlight target with cursor" option in the "User interface options" section - is that what you were looking for?

Nope. This was something specifically in "Display options." I don't remember what it was called. That whole section seems to have gone since last I looked.

Yeah, the options got really pared down awhile back. Sorry! You might try a previous version of the game; 3.1.2 or 3.2.0 maybe. I can't remember exactly when the pruning happened, but basically all the options that nobody felt were important got removed. Unfortunately, it seems at least some of them were important, just to a small subset of the community that didn't have the chance to speak up at the time.

I've created trac ticket #1836 to track this issue. In general, I am all in favor of UI changes that assist in playing the game with a screenreader, and would like to know more about what screenreader users need.

Is there any chance you (OP) you could do something like a "git bisect" to figure out exactly which commit caused the option to disappear?

What "bisect" does is narrow the problem down using bisection. Which is to say that it'll find the exact source change which removed this option, assuming you can identify it by compilation and trial, in... no more than 10ish steps.

Mostly for the Angband devs: The *whole* Angband history was imported into git, right?

That's not necessary. I've noted in the ticket the commit that removed the option. Thanks to takkaria for making useful comments when committing.

Not exactly. The main repository has history back to 3.0.7s3, which was the first import into the old Subversion repository. However, Nick's painstakingly assembled AngbandPlus repository has code for all the releases available, not to mention many, many variants.
