    Debian/Ubuntu packages for 3.5.1

Please don't get too excited - they have NOT been uploaded to the official archives yet.

But they are built and ready for testing:

Yes you need both of them. If you're installing manually with dpkg you need to install angband-data first, then angband.

Things to look for when testing:

    1. Does it work? With each of -mgcu, -mx11 and -msdl?

    2. Is the version number correct? (shift-v)

    3. Does the system-wide score file work again (i.e. characters from multiple UIDs)?

    4. Is there any cruft left from previous versions which you expect to have been removed?

    5. Are there menu entries and icons in your platform's window manager's menu system?

    6. Are the various readme, changelogs, thanks, copyright, manual and other docs where you expect to find them?

    7. Do subwindows behave properly?

    8. Do all the tilesets work EXCEPT Shockbolt's? (Sorry, but due to Shockbolt's choice of licence his tiles have to be packaged separately and they aren't ready yet - I'm working on it.)

    9. Are there any typos or other errors anywhere? (I already know about the wrong date in the news file - I'll fix that one.)

Please report any bugs in these packages - with full error output as an attachment please - in THIS thread, not in any other threads or on the bug tracker. Reports of bug-free experience also welcome!

Please note that the sounds have been removed from these packages - as with Shockbolt, dubtrain chose a non-DFSG licence so these are available separately if you want to try them:

Very many thanks in advance to anyone who tests these packages and reports back.

P.S. Although built for i386 it will work fine on amd64 architecture (you will need to tell dpkg this), but sadly not on Macs. Mac users will have to wait for the official builds - sorry.

      Sorry, still working on this.

I was unable to install it under a test vm with a 64-bit Crunchbang. Some problems with the 32-bit packages i couldn't resolve (yes, i know how to install 32-bit stuff in 64-bit environments - but it just didn't work cause of too many dependency problems)....so i reinstalled the vm using a 32-bit image of crunchbang (how retro is that!? ) and the install worked straight away.

I was only able to test the 3 "graphical" modes, no issues so far.

I will sure test the rest, maybe this weekend. Thanks for your support and packaging of this great game Also i usually run the git build in my users home, i think an official package is what most people want.

It's a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Darwin Awards.

              First test

              1. Does it work? With each of -mgcu, -mx11 and -msdl?
All starting fine. Using SDL as main interface in latter tests.
Additionally i play with roguelike keyset.

              2. Is the version number correct? (shift-v)
              Yes.

              3. Does the system-wide score file work again (i.e. characters from multiple UIDs)?
Haven't tested right now. May do later.
              score.raw is under /var/games/angband - looks at least system-wide.

              4. Is there any cruft left from previous versions which you expect to have been removed?
              Nope.

              5. Are there menu entries and icons in your platform's window manager's menu system?
Wrong WM (Openbox) - may try with another Distribution later.

              6. Are the various readme, changelogs, thanks, copyright, manual and other docs where you expect to find them?
              Yes. Just looked under /usr/share/angband.
              Code:
              man angband
              tested - worked too.

              7. Do subwindows behave properly?
              Tested with SDL - yes.

              8. Do all the tilesets work EXCEPT Shockbolt's? (Sorry, but due to Shockbolt's choice of licence his tiles have to be packaged separately and they aren't ready yet - I'm working on it.)
              Never play with them.
Looked good so far, i could choose different ones. All looked graphical and "not helpful" as usual (can't see any reason to play with tiles).

              9. Are there any typos or other errors anywhere? (I already know about the wrong date in the news file - I'll fix that one.)
None seen but haven't searched for them

That is great - as release manager for 3.5.1 and Debian packager, Magnate gets all the credit for this.

Like in your mobile device while driving? I heard there were some laptop that got so hot that it could quite literally cook nuts. That could give a Darwin Award, I guess.

Many thanks for being my sole tester - I confess to slight surprise that the people who asked where the Ubuntu packages were about five minutes after release don't appear to have tested them. Ho hum.
                    score.raw is under /var/games/angband - looks at least system-wide.
Unfortunately it isn't used - ~/.angband/Angband/scores/ is used instead, which is a nasty bug in the PRIVATE_USER_DIR code. This means that I either have to ship the packages without system-wide scores or ship something that isn't 3.5.1 (because I will need at least one extra commit to make them work).

Views appreciated. Jessie will be in released quite soon, and it would be a shame to miss it.

Ok, updated versions of the packages (same links) are now up, and the shared score file finally works!

Grateful for any further testing, from SaThaRiel or anyone else. Save files are back in /var/games/angband/save, but pref and dump files are still in ~/.angband/Angband

Unless I get any bug reports in this thread, I will upload to debian mentors later this week and see if I can find a sponsor.

With no further bugs reported, these packages have now been uploaded to Debian unstable. I don't know when they'll appear in testing (because Jessie is frozen), but I expect they'll appear in Ubuntu 15.04, whatever that's called, in April.
