Especially since nightmares have a nasty bite attack.

I think I have found this one - it looks like it only happens when the player has come up the stairs from DL1, and then recalls to DL99. Should now be fixed in 3.5.1.

Ah yes, I did this as I went to DL1 from town to recharge a rod of restoration, then recalled to dl99.

Minimum possible kill count = 1 apparently.

Yes and I killed a snake who happened by while I was resting.

Actually, do you win by killing Morgoth without killing Sauron?

No, as it turns out - you need to have no uncompleted quests, which requires two dead quest monsters.

You feel an intense desire to skip this monster...

Even so, it's probably considerably easier to beat Sauron down with Grond while wearing the massive iron crown than it is with typical endgame, dungeon-only equipment. You can probably get away with substantially fewer consumables this way.

I reported on this bug back in 3.5 dev. I ran past both Sauron on DL99 and Morgoth on DL 100 and went to DL 127. Fantastic drops down there before I went after the bosses. See the following thread:

“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”
