    Hybrid Spellcaster?

I've been trying to create a hybrid spellcaster, one that can cast some mage spells and some priest spells. Basically, trying to make a ranger that has some elements of mage abilities along with some of the medium healing abilities of priests.

Having no coding abilities, nonetheless I've been playing around with the edit files. I've pretty much figured out how to tweak race and class values in the "p_class" and "p_race" edit files and to turn on or off spell availability in the "spell" edit file. However, I haven't been able to cause both priest and mage spells to be available. I thought adding an "M:" line for the priest books and the "B: lines for selected priest spells (or alternatively all the lines for priest spells, but turning off all the ones inapplicable) and tweaking the mana costs and spell levels might work, but alas to no avail. Apparently, the last "M:" line is the one chosen and the other ignored.

Has anyone successfully tried this? Any helpful suggestions?

    Changes are made in Spell.txt

Spell.txt indicates that tval 90 is for mages and 91 for priests, then you have to indicate what book and slot the spell goes into (offset by -1, so magic missile is book 0, slot 0)

You also have to change the N line to put the spell number in the right section (first half mage spells, second half priest).

Easiest way to do it is to hash out the spell you are replacing, copy in the spell you are adding just below it, then copy the N:XX bit and the entire I:x:x:x line from the replaced spell into the added spell.

Edit: OK, more is required to get that to work. I just cast Mana Storm, but got detect evil results.

This is not possible in current V without changing code and recompiling.

It will be possible in restructured V (ETA late this year or early next year, I hope) just by editing p_class.txt.

            I'm doing almost nothing else

You remind me that I haven't done an update to the forum for about four months - I'll do that soon.

Because I'm getting quite giddy with excitement at the prospect of a newly refactored Vanilla, I have to know... Have you given any thought to a version number yet?

I nominate we start over from 2.4 again, except this time we pick a different amphibian. How about "2.4 axolotl-knows"?

Don't joke - there are moves afoot to have the bugfix version of 3.5 called 3.5.newt-knows.

I'm still thinking creatively about version number post restructure. Is anyone familiar with the p-adics?

That's unambitious, I feel. How about a surreal number instead? That way there'll always be room for a countably infinite number of available versions in between any given major version.

EDIT: Or is it uncountably infinite number of available versions? Math is hard -- my brain hurts.
