    Silly question, but...

    When I identify a potion/scroll will I ever find a potion/scroll of a different colour/title with the same effect? Does this work in the same way as rings/wands/staves?

    There aren't any duplicates, with one exception. There are things like

    Ring of Weakness (-3) {cursed}

    which is almost the same as

    Ring of Strength (-3) {cursed}

    except the Ring of Strength has sustain strength, in most variants. The difference is that Rings of Weakness are always useless.

        The answer is no - there are other, worse, scrolls that you don't want to read.
        One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
        In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

          And one of those nasties killed me the other day. Destruction, I think. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

            Hmmm. *Destruction* is a life saver - but preferable to have rBlind when you read it.

              The other horrible scrolls won't kill you, just wreck your game. They usually don't show up until quite deep, and they are rarely more than an inconvenience if you find them way out of depth. I suspect what got you was a potion of detonations, which are quite common in UnAngband.

                Everyone has a different playstyle, but I'd say that it's pretty safe to read most unidentified scrolls after you find summon monster - yes, there are a few bad scrolls still out there, but I'm normally able to handle them (eg. summon undead); by the time anything really bad shows up, I'm normally deep enough to have a cheap supply of id anyway.

                  You could very well be right - I was playing V and Un all last week and died enough times that I'm likely to be mixing up who died where and from what. lol

                    Had one of my WORST experiences yesterday with reading an unID scroll. I had just found my first decent vault, and I was almost full when I found it. I worked through it and had all my happy loot laying about trying to make room, decide what to keep. I decided I didnt need all these unID scrolls so instead of destroying or dropping them I start reading. You can imagine my surprise when I read my first ever *Destruction*. I have never had one in any previous game (still a noob). Everything went bye bye. Completely blasted all my stuff, messed up the floor, put walls in funny places.. *sigh* oh well.... at least I have the exp from all the monster kills

                      Well you can rest securely that you didn't lose any arts as they would still be on the floor following destruction.

                        that is comforting.. Like I said, my first decent vault. That was yesterday, today on the same toon, I found what I guess was a REAL vault had to dig all the way around to find the opening, and was COMPLETELY full of monsters. (except for permanent walls/halls in the vault) I couldnt clear it all. Only a small portion. I was low on arrows (ranger) and used them all, used all my mana, teleport away, fight with sword, teleport away, fight with sword, teleport away.. you get the idea.. I gave up when I kept getting teleported away by some mob every time I would round the same corner. Didnt know how to counter that.

                            I think he had already cleared the vault prior to reading ?Destruction.
