    changing birth options?

    Hello,

I made a new character and I want to change the birth option "Items always sell for 0 gold". But I just don't get how to do it. I can't enter the options menu during the birth procedure...
I guess I'm just one click away...

    greetings ugh the great

On the birth screen hit the "=" key and you'll see what you're after.

Hopefully you're setting it to the 0 gold option. It's so liberating.

It really should be more obvious, however.
I'm always forgetting to set it to randarts and have to start over.
Maybe it should just show the birth options screen when you have chosen your race/class?

It does say, quite clearly, to press '=' for options...

          Ah,

ok, i got it and it wasn't that difficult i must admit. The trick is to use "=" at the very beginning, not in the last charakter-build screen, where it doesn't work.

          Thanks for the response!

          good killing!

There are A LOT of words on that screen.

I don't think it's unreasonable to always take the player to the birth options screen, say, immediately before buying stats. If they don't want to change anything they can just immediately leave it; an extra keystroke per character is not going to kill anyone.

And it's all your fault for not reading them all. Seriously.

ToME 2 has a query at character creation, "Do you want to change the birth options ? y/n" before starting you off.

Ideally we can have birth (and other game options) accessible outside of the game at some point. I really want to do this with a lot of game params (like monster spawn rate, OoD cap, etc etc) and it makes sense to have some of the birth options here as well.

As user pref I assume? /char name?

Changing birth options is better to do during birth. That way you never forget to change them if they are something you don't want them to be.

I'm thinking both as a separate file or files, and accessible from the birth screens. And I'm possibly even more generous than fizzix on the question of how many parameters to allow changing

I'm not against external files, I do my keymap-tweaking using those. I'm just pointing out that this particular case you need that in game during character creation. Those settings are after all something you should not be able to change during playing. At least not easily. People are by nature quite lazy, and if cheating by changing rules becomes too easy people do that, even that it might feel wrong afterwards.

                              Hmm

                              1) Allow the options to be set during play, but not actually come into affect until the next character.

                              2) Allow the options to be changed while max depth is 0, since the game hasn't *really* started yet. (May not apply to 'start with equipment' type options)

                              3) Allow the options to be changed at any stage but mark the save file appropriately- so eg dumps will have "variable" as the option setting, and a notation in the character history.

Some option options may be mutually exclusive, but if we wind up having option option options things have gone too far.
