Why does literally everything do acid damage

The acid neutralizes itself in eating up the armor; if the armor cannot interact chemically with the acid, then the acid is not neutralized.

I think we're venturing into *hack territory here...

Another issue with acid is the totally opaque (to uninformed players) system of reducing acid damage by covering all your armor slots. And the fact that you'd often rather actually just take the damage onto your regenerating hitpoints than on your boots of +3 stealth.
