    Newbie hobbit rogue

    Hello everyone
I'm new, i started to play angband on november, i stopped on december, then i come back today
I want to share with you the delusion of dying by the hands of Boldor , after i killed all of his spawn lots of time and following on the level while he teleported, he started to chase me and began to hit me furiosly, every time i phased, he was there .

I lost the strongest item i ever had: Rod of Acid Balls (21-24 steps for recharging), found on a lucky level 2, which made me one shots lots of thing i never thought i was able to kill.
I want my revenge (and i'll obtain it with the 3.5, i was playing the 3.4.1).

Is there any strategy for a Hobbit Rogue to stay alive against him?
I died so easily that i forgot i could use some mushroom :O.

Here's the log, every kind of suggestion is welcomed

For starters, I think he resists acid. Early magic devices are fun&powerful, but it makes your damage output erratic.

For gear, Find a {good} longbow or {good} weapon with multiple attacks per round. Build your Armor Class. Carry plenty of healing potions and escape scrolls.

I think he can summon more yeeks to help himself, so fight him in a corridor if possible with as little space around you. If you're injured at low level when monster ranged attacks are rare, read a ?Phase and drink a bunch of healing potions.

Detect monsters so you know when fights are coming. Light rooms

Before the fight with a new unique, get buffed. In order of importance Speed, Stoneskin, heroism, berzerk, bless. I'm not sure about the new mushrooms, its been a while since Ive played vanilla.

    Happy angbanding!

You shouldn't expect to be able to fight everything you meet the first time you meet it. This is doubly true for uniques, which tend to be stronger than anything else when you first find them.

That said, Boldor is beatable. Standard tactics apply:

      * Optimize your STR and DEX, and then wield a lightweight weapon like a dagger. Your goal is to get at least 2 blows per round, ideally more. The more melee attacks you get, the more time your bonus damage (from STR and magical enchantments) applies, which is going to largely overwhelm the dice on the actual weapon.

      * Carry lots of Phase Door and curing potions. Early on, Cure Light Wounds is plenty, and it's available infinitely at the Temple. Phase away and then drink potions to restore your HP; don't try to heal while in melee.

      * Recognize when things are going badly and run away immediately, rather than waiting until the last possible turn. Something can easily go wrong in your attempts to escape. Early on, escape may just consist of reading Word of Recall and then waiting for it to kick in, but ideally you should get a Staff of Teleportation as soon as you can. Eventually (much later than Boldor) you want Scrolls of Teleport Level.

Rogues are not very strong in early game.
It's vital to have means of escape and use them.

Hobbit rogues have extraordinary stealth. Try to acquire more steatlh items to get even better and use your stealth to avoid strong monsters until you can beat them.

Also, look out for good slings. There are some exceptional good ones in the game.

A note unrelated to your character (well, almost) - version 3.5 is out, you may want to switch to that for the next one.

            @Nick: I started a new hobbit rogue with 3.5 i think it's easier and i feel luckier
@emulord: Thanks, you are right, i was fighting against his resistance and it was my only effective weapon! I have to master both weapons and AC and i'll try to get buffed but i don't like to carry lots of scroll...
            @Derakon: Thanks,
i would like my str in 18 but i don't know how to pump it up!
My dex went up due to some awesome cloak, so i'm now:
            str 15
            dex 18/90
and i have two blows with my best weapon.

Staff of Teleportation is a good idea, i never used teleport as spell.

@Mondkalb: i got the stealth, now i hope to find some good sling!

            Questions:
What's the best between sling, bow, crossbow?
I found the holy book "Godly Insights", can i use it for something?

For the early game, boosting your stats is only something you do during character birth. You're unlikely to find gear that gives stat boosts until later. There are also potions that permanently modify your stats: either by draining a random stat to boost a specific one (e.g. Potions of Brawn) or just by straight-up improving a stat (e.g. Potions of Strength).

The best missile launcher is the one that does the most damage. If you find a really awesome sling, use it; most classes eventually end up using an artifact bow or crossbow. The only class that really cares is the ranger, since they get bonus shots when using bows only.

Also: your rings are not very impressive. Getting your damage up is more important than improving your AC. AC does have some minor impact on your survivability but it's really pretty trivial. The activation on the Ring of Flames can prove useful, but really you should swap those out with something better as soon as you can.

You can use enchant weapon scrolls to enchant your weapons and ammo. This usually goes quite well up to +8/+8 or +9. After that the failure rate of the scroll rises drastically.

You can only use magic spell books. Godly insights is one of the dungeon priest spell books which you can sell for a good price to the temple.
