    Questions about stats

    Hi guys,

When I assign stat points upon character creation I find I tend to think 'well if I only assign X point to this stat, does that mean I will struggle to achieve Y.' Obviously many things factor into any attempts to answer that, primarily the gear I find. But a key piece of information I lack, is how many stat points do you gain until you max out. (From potions).

If you were a 'classless' human, starting out with 14 across the board, and maxxed out on stat potions, what would your stats be? 18? 18/100? Or is it semi-random? (Like hitdice rolls)

Also, while on the subject, some stats' usefulness max at 18/200 and others at 18/220? I'd love for those to become uniform in an later update.

I've just been playing 3.5 and love it, thanks to the everyone involved!

But to answer your question, base stats go from 3 to 18/100. Race, class and equipment bonuses are applied to the base stats to give your final stats. Look at the (C)haracter screen to see the "self" column associated with the underlying base stats.

Stat maximum is independent on starting stats and is 18/100 + calss bonus + race bonus.

Yeah, you have "internal" stats that range from 3 to 18/100, and those are then modified by your race, class, and equipment. So you might start with e.g. an 18/30 score (i.e. 21) in STR despite only having put 5 points in at character birth, because your race and class contribute +6 to the start. But your "natural max" would then be 18/160, also due to that +6.

          Let's see if I understand...

Ok let me see if I've got his right.

If your starting character had no racial, class or birth stat points contributing to STR then he/she would start with a STR score of 10. (You can't start with less than 10 without negative class/racial modifiers?). And potions would lift this to 18/100 before you max out?

Taking Derakon's example, if Race/Class gave +6 then the max is 18/160

Adding +5 birth points to STR doesn't affect the maximum, it 'only' affects my character's early game strength and how many stats potions are required to max out?

So the strategy of assigning birth points comes down to either minimizing how many potions you need to hit maximum (not dumping above 6 points in a stat) or trying to determine if some stats are more vital than others in the early game and boost them at the expense of others (pre to stat gain).

Yes, you have it correct on all counts.

              Thanks Derakon.

Do potions of stat swapping affect the max value possible for the stats they affect?

No, nothing changes your maximum attainable value; it is 18/100, period.

Nope. Stat swap just means you need a little more of one and a little less of the other in order to max out. You're still shooting for 18/100 in the self column of the character screen.
