    Hold still! Show some Discipline!

Okay, I have been playing this game for the passed few weeks like my life depended on it, like it's a full time job. And lots of ideas for changes/improvements come up, but none of them with any sure footing, except one: I'm on dl82 right now. In these later dungeon levels, I like to slay a room full of hydras or a room full of dragons, even if I'm carrying two scrolls of mass banishment (which, amazingly, are still in my inventory and have not burned up after slaying about 20 Dracolisks). Well, it's really important that my character *STAY STILL* and not move into the hallway full of fire breathing monsters. I'm not going to read every message and carefully press next when slaying a room full of monsters. That would be insane. To cycle through the messages I keep pressing in the direction I am attacking. When I'm done slaying a monster and another one doesn't come in to replace him, I press search to bring the next one into the empty spot. I suppose I could press 's' while cycling through the messages, but it's much more bothersome and I would eventually get confused cycling between 's' and 'direction' and invariably miss press the wrong button at the wrong time. My character may have protection against fear and confusion, but I don't.

I'm scanning the messages but moving through them pretty quickly, around 3 to 5 messages a second. Well, you can guess what always happens. The next dragon is slow to replace the one I just fell, and I move into the empty spot, which is in the corridor, where a row of dracolisks are all waiting to breathe fire and burn up the books in my pack, and all the dropped gear littered in the hallway, which includes several replacement books.

*** Is there a way to hold the character in place, like a key to toggle "suspend movement" or "keep still" until the fighting is over or until I need to flee? ***

If not, it could work like this:

When in a slog of mass slaying, a command to hold the character, say, [SHIFT] + H and a little message on the bottom of the screen (like the ones that tell you you're in DTRAP or rFire etc.) that says CHOLD (or something) to let you know you're in this mode. The purpose of this feature would be to prevent unwanted movement. So nothing you press when in the CHOLD mode would move you from your spot. You have to toggle it off to be able to move again. Search and Rest or other things that happen without the character moving would still work. Hell, it could even be a spell, or a potion or a scroll: "You have read a scroll of Discipline, you have no more scrolls of Discipline" You could press [SHIFT] + H to deactivate it or it could just wear off after x amount of turns like other temporary effects.

Further thoughts: any spell or action on the player that teleports or blinks the player would automatically terminate the CHOLD effect.

Just to clarify: this is not paralysis--it's just preventing turns to happen when trying to move the character in any direction. Nothing about the character's innate abilities is effected by CHOLD. Thoughts?

I think holding down the control key while moving should already have this effect. It does in Sil.

Nice! Thanks! Of course the shop keeper has no books I need. Dangerous times these are.

Also, doesn't <space> clear messages with no risk of movement or resting/searching too often.

And there's an option to automatically clear -more- prompts (most useful if you have a terminal dedicated to the message log).

Unless you use hjkl (roguelike-like keyset) for moving.

How does the 'clear more' option work? It would be great if you could set how fast it could automatically cycle through the messages between turns, because I often just fly through messages and then check the log to see if I lost something worthwhile or if some equipment was damaged or to try to understand why my health went from 832 to 52 in a flash. So in high tension battles I could have the option to move manually through the messages very slowly, and other times (more often) have some command invoke a mode where it will automatically cycle through all the messages between my turn and all the baddies at a given speed--say 4 messages per second.

Another question regarding resistances--if I have rDisenchantment, does it help reduce the chance of my gear being disenchanted or just how much damage is done by a breath of disenchantment? Also, what's with a bolt of fire from an Aether (or was it a Time vortex) damaging my heavy xbow of power that I was not even wielding, but was in my inventory? That was... strange... since usually only books, scrolls and staffs get destroyed by fire.

EDIT: The Great Hell Wyrm just damaged my heavy xbow of power (to dam 24) after I picked up the exact same weapon after the other one was damaged by the vortex. It must be the high to-dam value makes it more susceptible to damage, because until this weapon being damaged twice I've never had a weapon damaged by fire (that I'm aware of, anyway). Prolly should be using Belthronding anyway, since it boosts my dragon slaying and Undead slaying of my Mace of Disruption.

Resistance to disenchantment is a 100% protection for your gear, as well as a damage reduction against disenchantment breath.

Fire breaths can destroy any fire-susceptible gear that's in your inventory, which means not just scrolls and staves but also soft armor, bows and slings, some weapons, etc. As far as I'm aware it will destroy your gear right out, not damage it as if it were hit by acid/disenchantment. It doesn't care about the bonuses on the item.

In other words, if you're carrying a swap item, be careful around enemies who use elements it is vulnerable to.

I thought this was changed to just damage stuff in your inventory, not destroy. I'm not sure though.

Also, to OP. If you're using auto-more, I highly recommend making a subwindow for messages. It helps a lot with making sure you didn't miss important stuff.

I lost a couple to-dam on both of my heavy xbows, but they did not get destroyed. Just found a very valuable item so will not have to worry about fire anymore (nor monster aggravation). Dunno how rare the item is, tho, so I won't share it to be spoiler-safe. That is fantastic news regarding disenchantment.

Grotug, don't worry. Most people here (excluding me) can list at least two thirds of all artifacts, with stats.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about Narya -- and I didn't even have to check the artifact spoilers to make certain I had the right Ring of Power!

Much of the other gear that gives immunity to fire also aggravates, incidentally.

Sadly, monster aggravation is a bad thing, not a good thing. It wakes up all monsters within a certain range (AFAIA).
Not entirely sure, but does it make things like hounds chase you?

Well, actually... it can be a good thing (as you sort of allude to). It can be wonderful for luring powerful uniques into a strategically advantageous position (for @!), but of course it requires a bit of finesse so that you won't be chased down by a pitful of pit fiends.
