1st time playing a priest character

It's my first time trying to play a priest character and I've got a few questions. Since edged weapons are off-limits, what are the best weapons to look out for? Does the edged weapon prohibition extent to arrows and bolts? Unlike mages, it seems that when I try to learn a prayer, I can choose the prayer book, but the prayer learned is chosen at random rather than at my choice. Is that a bug or is that the way it's supposed to work?
“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Anything blunt, obviously (whips, maces, flails, hammers), and any weapon with the Blessed property - so that's (Blessed) and Holy Avenger egos, and quite a few artifacts.

    No.

That's the way it works. You can manipulate it a bit. For example, Orb of Draining is the main priest attack prayer, and appears in book 3; you can save up learnable prayers in such a way that when you start learning from book 3 you can be sure of getting OoD.

As a priest you have to rely on your God (or Gods) to deliver the right prayer to you.
