    Hello to the community

    Hi all

It has been a little bit amazing for me to discover this community here recently. I used to play Angband as a teenager in the 90s but I didn't have internet and my computing experience was very solitary. Since then I've revisited Angband a few times and now is another time for that.

However, this time is entirely different because now I really checked out online sources and found this forum. Yay! You guys cannot imagine the amount of questions I have, because the documentation on this game has always been rather difficult if not simply sparse. There are just so many things that I never knew, like I just found out a few minutes ago that you can stack basic resistances once from a temporary source onto a permanent one.

Maybe I just never bothered to read all the text files thoroughly. As a teenager I was mostly preoccupied with artifacts.spo. But now I'm trying to learn as much as I can, and I have to say the search feature on this forum is not very powerful, or in any case I'm having problem using it. The same goes for the forum for another game that I play so perhaps it's me.

Anyway, I was going to ask a specific question that was on my mind but I forgot what it was. But so nice to find this community. Angband to me is the prototype for so many games. It has to speak volumes about game design that a game with such simple and limited graphical mechanics can be so engaging and playable.

    Cheers.

Yes, the question I had was about inscribing. I just discovered how you can use this feature to assign number keys to inventory items. I inscribed my rods with '@#' and that works fine, but when I tried to do the same for my Wand of Teleport Other it doesn't work. I inscribed it with '@0' but when I hit 'z' (I'm using roguelike commands) and then '0' all that does is toggle the term 2 window display between showing my equipment and showing my inventory.

Specifically what happens is that after hitting 'z' the main window shows a list of wands in my inventory and waits for me to hit an appropriate key to pick one to use (like usually). Then when I hit '0' nothing changes in the main window but the term 2 window changes from my inventory to my equipment. When I hit the '0' key again it changes back to displaying the inventory, while nothing changes in the main window. I can repeat hitting '0' to toggle between the displays in term 2, as long as term 0 is still showing a list of my wands and waiting for my input.

Is this a bug possibly? I'm on Windows 7 running Angband 3.4.1.

Try @a0 for wands, @u0 for staves and so on. That works for me.

        Welcome aboard!

If I need to search this forum I exit to google and type in my search prefaced by 'angband oook', and I find that works much better.

        Hope that helps!

Hi and thanks. @a0 yielded no different result, and neither did @z0 (I am using roguelike commands so 'z' is for wands).

I believe if you have any item that is simply inscribed with "@0", then that "claims" 0 for use for all items. So if you want to have two items that are both accessible via 0, then they both have to be inscribed with specific-command inscriptions. Dunno if that's your problem, though.

For some reason @4 worked. I tried changing my Rod of Recall from @0 to @a0 and then my Wand of Teleport Other to @z0 but that still didn't work. I'll do some more testing on this and try to figure it out but I can't right now since I'm on a dangerous level and can't really test using Rod of Recall, Staff of Teleportation etc.

I have another question. Is it realiable in version 3.4.1 that if the level feeling is below "worthwhile" there is definitely no artifact on the level?

No. Level feelings scale with depth in the dungeon (so an early game "worthwhile" would probably be a late game "cobwebs"), and artifacts have highly variable power levels and thus valuations.

If you want to know if there's an artifact on the level, then turn on the "Lose artifacts when leaving level" birth option; it gives you a "special" level feeling if there are artifacts on the level. But of course, if you don't find them, then they're lost forever...

I wouldn't trust that there is no artifact on bad level feelings. You can get artifact in just about any level feeling. Just not anything really great if the feeling isn't a good one. OTOH, if that artifact is a crappy one, then why try to get it? Many good ego-items / trinkets beat most artifacts in usefulness.

I figured out what the problem was. I was inscribing them with the keys from the roguelike keyset but the inscription feature doesn't recognize that. I tried inscribing them with the corresponding keys from the original keyset and now it works. So even though I aim a wand using 'z', I need to inscribe them with @a#.

I was asking because I read in a changelog that artifacts now generate at least "worthwhile" feeling. Are you aware of this?

In changes.txt that came with 3.4.1 under the heading Gameplay changes:

1c96ef9 Make artifacts give a minimum feeling of "worthwhile"

Yes, this was an issue in 3.4; all of your inscriptions will need to be using the original commands. Roguelike inscriptions are fixed in the nightlies.

Because I'm already down to dlvl 50 and I still don't have resist confusion. I'm playing a human ranger and confusion really messes me up. Blindness is not as bad as I have a cap of telepathy. What I would really like to find is Thranduil, which shouldn't be that hard to find. That way I wouldn't have to give up my telepathy .

I keep seeing this "nightlies". What is that? Also, I thought I had the latest version. Is 3.5 already available? I downloaded the game very recently.

I was not aware of that, and I think it's a dumb change. But then, I also think level feelings are kind of stupid, so I guess I'm not the best judge here.

You can download the nightly builds here. But be warned that they're going to be buggier than the official releases. 3.5 isn't out yet, so if you want to play it you're pretty much stuck with the nightlies.
