If only I could find Ugluk I'll be a happy man.

I got the big M! I believe the expression is 'W00t'.

I made a near fatal error, however...

I recalled down to dlvl99, having picked up my final-battle consumables. Then I noticed one of those massive 'Union Jack' style vaults right next to me and thought, 'while I'm here...'. I cleared it and the only thing of worth was the randart version of Narya. Well it was only CON+5, rather than my ring of CON+6, but it gave me susstr and more DEX. So I slipped it on, dropped the CON ring, created a staircase and down I went.

Of course it meant I lost suscon, which I hadn't noticed. After the first aborted battle with Morgoth (I read a scroll of destruction and he disappeared off the level - the second time that's happened to me), I got mano a mano with him (well, doggo a mano). As he dropped my CON my maxHP naturally started dropping too. I actually fought two rounds with my maxHP below 600 (the damage from his manastorm). After the second round my HP was 26. This included a blow from Ugluk (See! Told you! Thank god it wasn't Vecna!).
At this point I did the old 'step away from the keyboard' thing for half an hour. Thank god I did because I remembered that potions of Life restore your stats. In my defense I only ever use them in the final battle and I've only ever fought Morgoth a handful of times. After that it was plain sailing. And I finished off Ugluk too.

        Congrats!
Why didnt you use your 2 shooting speed items though ? For ESP, you can eat a few mushrooms.

          Thanks Estie.

I did consider it, but I was kind of building up to melee.
To be honest, I'm not even sure how you arrow Morgoth to death, especially without the Rune of Protection spell (scrolls are pretty scarce). Unless you're lucky enough to get into a vault corridor, I suppose.
And, yes, I do value ESP above almost anything else. Mushrooms just ain't gonna cut it for me!

Before the fight, make a Destruction zone. Wait for Morgoth to show up; angle yourself so that he spends a few rounds out of melee range but in LOS. When he gets too close, phase away and repeat. Dunno what advantages a vault corridor would have over this.

I was thinking that if had a vault corridor he wouldn't be able to destruct it. Then you could lay runes of protection all along it and stand at the end. If the runes extend to the corner none of his summons would have LoS and you could fire away at will while he broke his way through them. Admittedly, that would leave room for summons behind him as he went but they could be banished and you wouldn't be in melee with any of them anyway.

              Bad idea?

It's not a bad idea, but it's tricky to pull off as you need a reasonably long corridor made of permanent rock, and of course the runes. If you do have those then by all means, go nuts, but such a setup is by no means a requirement if you want to shoot Morgoth to death.

Back in the day, rangers used to use a "Sea of Runes" technique to kill Morgoth -- they'd create a radius-2 "ball" of runes, stand in the center, and shoot Morgoth as he approached, then teleport him away once he reached the perimeter of the runes. In those days, summons appeared next to the player, but if every tile out to a distance of 2 was occupied, the summon would just silently fail. Thus the only offensive actions Morgoth could take were direct-damage spells, which are not a serious threat if you have adequate healing on-hand. Nowadays summons appear next to the summoner, so such a technique wouldn't work.

Surrounded by permanent rock M is really dangerous in melee-range. That multiplies the chance that you don't get pushed away by earthquake crush (if that happens) and double that can cause well over 700 points of damage in single turn.

So, long corridor works for shooting, but is not safe for melee.

                    Can Morgoth earthquake a vault?

Sure, and so can the player. Permanent walls can never be modified by any means, and I'm pretty sure that staircases are also sacrosanct, but every other tile can be altered by earthquake/destruction/shatter attacks.

So even if there's nothing but permanent rock within range, you can still get squashed by granite? Seems unfair!

Ceiling and floor are still granite

Like I said, I'm pretty sure (not 100% though) that stairs are also safe, so stand on a staircase and you should be immune to being crushed. However, you're gonna be hard-pressed to find a staircase in a vault.

...hm, can the relevant mage spell work in vaults? Can it modify icky floor tiles?

Then why can't you tunnel down to the level below?

You assume that level below is right under you. It might not be.
