Cannot move to lower dungeons

Okay so I started playing yesterday. Got a warrior chap to level 8.

My problem is that I can't descend lower than two levels below the town. I'm in a dungeon with 5 exits (all up, and no down).

I've tried going up and then down again, i.e. to generate a new level, and after trying this three of four times I still cannot work it out.

Are dungeon levels unlocked? Do I need to search in a particular way for the stairs going down? Do I create them myself with a spell or suchlike? I'm a little confused.

That should not happen, and I haven't seen it before. Are you playing with the Angband dungeon map? Are you sure you have searched the whole dungeon level? There may be secret doors to other parts of the level that you haven't found.

My recommendation would be to keep trying, and report back if you are sure that there are consistently no down stairs.

You should also post in the Variants forum, rahter than this one, because if this is a bug it's in FAngband, not in Vanilla.

I did have a level in Vanilla 3.3.2 where I only had one type of stairs. Here's the post from my long thread:

I just looked and the one I Recalled to seems to have only a downstairs. This is a bit awkward since I happen to be on L99 at the moment and I don't feel like taking on Morgoth just yet. I'm going to pop back upstairs but still...

Try hitting shift-M twice to bring up the world map. Which edge of the screen you take determines the direction you go.

Aren't there quests in FA? Sounds like you got a quest monster to kill at 100ft and stairs won't appear until you have killed it.

Yes, that's entirely possible. It depends which map is being used.

PowerWyrm - again depends on map, but at that depth it certainly isn't a quest.
