How many times have you won the game?

I've managed to beat the game extactly one time, but others seem to be able to trivialize the game, so I was wondering how many other people have been able to beat the game consistently... and how many times...

Just once. And that was in 3.1.2, probably around the easiest version, aided by a ridiculously good randart weapon found very early on. I've come close a couple of other times, but always died before making it to Morgoth.

My main problem is that I find stealth play and safe tactics boring and unsatisfying, and tend to try and stick it out in melee with dangerous enemies once I've got them down to low health, or take on vaults that are too lethal for my character level. I get killed because I try to stick around on interesting levels instead of running from trouble.

I've won enough times. We'll leave it at that. I don't win every game, or even most games; my characters tend to have a high infant mortality rate. But I'd say about 50% of the characters that make it to 2500' will win. Something like that, anyway.

My track record is rather worse in variants, of course.

Lost count in somewhere 2.7.x era when Ben was still maintainer.

Game is quite easy if you just:
        1. don't get greedy
        2. know what's nearby
        3. don't get yourself surrounded
        4. assume anything you don't know can kill you at first time you see it
        5. know how to escape a bad situation
        6. assume that anything faster than you can kill you unless you know for a fact that it can't
        7. realize that it is side-effects, not the actual damage you need to be afraid of once you have 600+HP and that resistances are not required for damage prevention (with exception of basic four & poison)
        8. learn how to use swap-items.

Those rules apply quite well in variants too, just the point 7 might need adjustments depending of the variant.

          3. ~30 if you count variants. I win less than 1% of the games I start. I win maybe a 1/3 of the games where winning is my primary goal and I pour a lot of effort into it.
          You are on something strange

            In 3.3.2 I've won 7/9 times.

            In order,

High Elf Ranger with 500+ HP died to an out of depth random spawn AMHD breathing into the only resistance hole.

            Dwarf Priest winner.

Gnome Mage dies on L1 to a Yellow Mold. *blush*.

            Gnome Mage winner.

            Half-Troll Warrior winner.

            High Elf Ranger winner.

            Dunadan Paladin winner.

            Hobbit Rogue winner.

            High Elf Mage winner.

Currently working on a Kobold Warrior and a Half Orc Priest is up next.

How do I win consistently? Patience, young grasshopper. That's 7 winners in about a year of playing 3.3.2 since I restarted.

Control the combat and fight only when you have a reasonable chance of surviving. Use the terrain to your advantage even if you have to create the terrain (such as by tunnelling).

Twice: 3.0.3 High-Elf Mage, 3.0.5 Dwarf Warrior. Plus two variant wins - Steamband 0.4.0 Scandinavian Adventurer, FAangband 0.3.6 Ent Rogue.

The thing they all have in common is I really wanted to win, so was focused on learning and improving my play when I died. My advice on what not to do:
              1. Don't get too stuck in the moment (he's-down-to-two-stars syndrome). Be aware of when you could be killed next turn, and be prepared to do something about it (leave or heal).
              2. Don't ever think "OK, this should be easy now"; in particular don't start planning your victory dance when you're clevel 34.
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Twice for me also (Hobbit Rogue and Half-Troll Warrior).

                My only advice is:

                1. Don't drink and dive.

I've gotten 4 wins so far, all on the 3.5-dev branch. For years I would struggle to get to stat gain and then typically get myself killed. The key for me was really figuring out when i was powerful enough to take on certain creatures and uniques, and when I should just gtfo. Previously I was very much a "man mode" player where I would attempt to overcome obstacles that were questionable rather than avoid them until I knew for a fact I was strong enough to handle it without much issue. Watching Fizzix' Let's Play Angband Youtube videos helped me a lot as well.

I have now made it my mission to win with all 6 classes. So far I've gotten a rogue, ranger, paladin, and mage win. I've been working on a priest, but my playtime has been a little more limited lately, and I have lost quite a few of them so far to unfortunate circumstances in the early levels. Usually once i get to about 1000 feet I find that my chance of a successful run goes up quite a bit, but before that point all bets are off, for me at least.

About 30-40 times at a rough guess...all versions starting with 3.0.5 onwards. Although played on-and-off since 2.7.8, never really got serious until 3.0.5.

Almost all Dunadan and High-Elf Warriors, although have won with Dunadan rangers, mages and a Dwarf priest.

More than 10 times (also in ZAngband, Quickband and NPP). I'm winning for fun right now. Just won my artifactless bookless hobbit mage in one try http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=14420 Although you didn't asked for advice... If you want to win:

                          - Don't hold a key (no double moves)
                          - Make sure nothing can kill you in one turn
                          - Don't fight multiple dangerous monsters at one time
                          - Be prepared for unexpected things - out of depth monsters, monster summon, monster not detected by telepathy (dangerous golems and Qs), traps
                          - Keep your current hit points as high as possible just in case these things happen
                          - Almost always it's better to fight from distance than in hand to hand combat

I have won more than 10 times, highlights include:
                            - won with hT in all classes
                            - non-melee HE ranger (with +0, +0 Ringil)

This is one of my problems. I get a decent dps, I get some decent resists and health... 3 beers later and it's a tombstone.

I stopped playing games drunk after I lost a diablo3 hardcore char. to some stupid choices.
