Hi. i've played moria and angband for a very long time. I remember when my dad first brought it home with that old compaq "laptop" with the tiny puke green screen. I've never won. Not even close.

When my interest renewed for the game, as it always does, i found these forums and looked at a few posts and noticed a lot of talk about priests. i've never raised a priest before or any dwarf for that matter.

I wish i would have. I'm destroying monsters that i'd struggle with running what i'm used to using: rangers/mages

My equipment is pretty weak but i'm not having trouble with much of anything at the moment. Do i need to go deeper to get the things i need or do i need something before i go any deeper?

Hmm...by this point OOD is your primary attack, so you won't get that much benefit now from enchanting your longbow's damage up (probably should outwait ___ of Extra Shots at this point). You could also use something that provides RBase (Resistance/Elvenkind body armor/shield); I'm unsure how many trips at your current depth would make that plausible.

Obsoleting the Westernesse (to get the Blessed weapon in) is trickier, since both ring slots are committed and this character isn't ranged enough (that longbow, again) to get away without substantial melee.

I'd consider going to DL 28 or DL 29. I don't think any normal monster-generation breakpoints will trip, and the chances of out-of-depth monsters being out-of-depth enough to drop gain stat potions will be much better.

Enchant that longbow! Archery is always a good way to extend your mana, especially in fights against non-evil monsters.

I second the notion of going deeper, except I say go to level 30-33. You need stat potions, which are native to dl 30. And you can kill mature dragons easily with OOD.

IMO he should wait until he gets the 4 basic resistances covered. You can get an occasional D showing up at that depth, especially near vaults, and it'll hurt bad if they breath on you. He should find an armor/shield/foo of Resistance before too long.

He's a Priest. He can detect D's from a mile away. RBase is still pretty non-critical at this depth, and the sooner he goes deeper, the sooner he'll actually find an item granting RBase.

I'm a little bit in a conflict: wearing the Defender gives me rBase, but wielding the Holy Avenger would push my WIS nicely - loads of extra SP.

I hope that in the stat-Potion depth I also find something Elvenkind or so.

btw I never got such nice boots

            any tips for me?

edit: oh, i just realized that i was still wearing RoFA. I will change that.

The Cutlass Defender is a bad choice for a priest. It makes your fail rate go way up, so you won't have a good Healing spell.

Use Narsil or the Holy Avenger. With Narsil, you won't be slowed by the weight (esp with +2 STR), and the extra 2 blows is a huge advantage.

If you use Narsil, you can carry the Cutlass as a swap.

arr, of course, i have to start carrying with me different weapons and do some swapping - never did it.

                oh, and
                @Zappa:
It is kind of obvious (but perhaps you didn't use it, too, because you weren't used to priest), but "Protection from Evil" totally rocks (e.g. vs Orcs, Ogres, Trolls) - Trollpits are done *very* fast.

Teleport failed, after Kavlax hit me once - the second hit killed me. He was in a Vault - should have looked at the monster list more closely when i detected evil.

Hmm...you started with Angband 3.0.9 than switched back to 3.0.6? Interesting......

Kavlax is too dangerous to be mistaken for a multihued 'd'. You can fix this be editing .../lib/edit/monster.txt and replacing

                    G:d:v
                    with
                    G:M:v

and removing ATTR_MULTI from the list of flags.

Also: make sure to buy out the black market of Teleport Level and Teleport scrolls. When facing an instakiller like Kavlax, you don't want to use something with a chance of fail. (Tele Level is the best if you are low on HP--you get a free turn when you change levels.)

note that the first post was done by another player.
but I tried 3.0.9 yesterday indeed. But i couldn't get it to start from anywhere except my installation folder in kubuntu and there were several things i disliked (the "enter" feature - i always hit "enter" instead of "space" to skip uninteresting messages, the real auto-pickup, i didn't manage to get the question if I want to pick it up, etc)

                      @Pete Mack:
thanks for the tip with changing the symbol - i will do that.

i found a HA dagger with +4 wis so i switched out the westernesse and the ring of con for a FA ring and the dagger.

I also found godly insights so i got rid of my 1st prayer book. (phial + detection).

Did you mean protection from evil or dispel evil? when i find a orc/troll pit i stand in the doorway and dispel em.

I'm still getting used to casting since OoD is M>B>B now and DispelEvil is M>C>D. i spent the first thirty levels typing m>c>b. over and over again.

Also is my stealth always going to be iffy?

Edit: i started using protection from evil and it's been great!
I've never felt so powerful as with a dwarf priest.
I need Rconf and Rbasic whats a good depth to find things i can use for that?

Dispel Evil failed to often due to my much lower WIS.

Hehe, yeah, there are some Spells/Prayers i always type, but i think it would be very handy, if you macroed OoD.

Stealth is only determined by your race/class combo and doesn't raise with clvl, so to get better stealth skills you have to use items.

Mh, I think if you stay a while at around '1500 there should be dropped something like "Robe of Resistance" or a Shield of Elvenkind - or perhaps blunt weapon Defender. Mh, my low-level rConf item is often the "Cap of Thengel" which can also be found around that depth.

                          -
and yeah, i also recognized that OoD was getting weaker. So what is the high-lvl attack of a priest?

jey, back in the game: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7547
looking for stat pots and in general some artifacts. except the Defender nothing really cool...

I started a new Dwarven Priest - he has a Mace (Defender), what's really useful.

dispel undead and later dispel evil are the high level priest damage spell in the regulr books... but their damages is much more random being 1d(level*3)... the bonus though is instead of a ball it is everything in line fo sight that is undead or evil

seems there is a better one in one the special books, annihilation... but it 200 damage to one target but can't be undead, demon, elemental, golem or vortex

of course their is also holy word which is essentially dispel evil, rtriple heal, and curing in one

mh, i am next to a vault with several bad guys in it. i won't open it because i don't want to lose my char and my CON is still very bad.

                              In it:
                              1 Ancient Red Dragon
                              1 Ancient Gold Dragon
                              Tom the Stone Troll
                              1 doombat
                              2 balance drakes
                              1 Grave Wright
                              at least 1 gravity hound
                              some trolls

would it have been possible to survive it with my current state?
