    Rings of Constitution / Intelligence

Can these go above +5? What is the maximum?

Bonus question: why is there the ring of STR/INT/CON/DEX vs amulet of WIS/CHA schism?

I can think of two reasons.

The first is that that's how the original devs decided to do it, probably thinking flavor-wise that amulets make a good stand-in for holy symbols (WIS) and impressive jewelry (CHA) and nobody ever bothered to change it.

The second is that WIS and CHA are less valuable than STR/DEX/CON so it's no big deal if they occupy a less-competitive slot than the ring slot. Of course this doesn't explain INT any.

'Amulet' does have religious and hence WIS connotations, aye. I guess I'm curious as to why it doesn't divide down bodykeeping/soulkeeping lines, although those rings are of course relatively recent developments.

            Code:
            c) the Ring of Bling <+9>
Dropped by an Archon at 2750 feet (level 55).

                 +9 charisma.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
*Blinds* creatures not resistant to light.
                 Sustains your charisma.

When activated, it causes shopkeepers to offer you random discounts
and hounds to dry hump your legs.
Takes 705 to 1032 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 93.9%

                 Radius 3 light.

Originally, barring few artifacts, blessed weapons and crowns of lordliness, only Amulet of WIS had wisdom bonus, so priests usually were stuck using highest PVAL one they could find (even HA weapons had STR bonus).

Mages were supposed to be really hard class with their low HP and low CON until very late, and for that reason INT as ring was nearly only way to get high INT (again, few artifacts and crowns of magi), which made getting required speed much harder: need speed, need CON and need INT, hmmm...need third ring finger.

It was kind of different classes, different choices -thing. Now the game for different classes is way more uniform with so many items giving what you require. Can't say if that is good or bad, because so many other things have changed since early days.
