Oh, and thanks by the way. The keymapping works great.

I just thought I should mention that I'm finding the H-T Warrior more challenging than my Dwarf Priest or my Gnome Mage (mainly because of inventory/supply issues). Of course, this is a L50 character down on L70 or so of the dungeon and I must admit that it was easier than the Mage at the start of the game.

Yeah, this is certainly something that happens. Warriors come roaring out of the gate and have a fantastic early and mid-game, but they slow down a bit towards the end when they don't have as much versatility as the spellcasting classes. Being able to sop up huge amounts of damage becomes less helpful when that just means you can take three big attacks without dying instead of two -- though that's still worth quite a bit!

The important thing about warriors though is that they can get you that general game experience you need to be able to take the other classes to the endgame. A warrior can survive getting breathed on by a gravity hound, learn that they're bad news, and be forewarned for the future. A mage would most likely die, losing a lot of playtime in the process. That sucks when you had no reasonable way of knowing that gravity hounds are Bad News.

So what is the advantage of regular armor class points you get just from the armor itself versus the AC you get from any magical bonuses that your armor has?

There's no functional difference. Non-magical AC does represent the maximum amount of acid damage armor can take (e.g. Soft Leather Armor, with a base AC of 8, cannot take more than 8 points of acid damage), so that's something. Base AC also can't be removed by disenchantment attacks. Also there's a practical cap of around +10 to magically enchanting armor (on your own -- armor you find can have theoretically any amount of enchantment). So in general, base AC is "better" than magical AC. But as far your overall armor class there's no difference.

Even given context (omitted here), I fail to see how you judge one to be ""better"" than the other. I'd much prefer to have low base/high enchantment armour just because it often weighs much less.

That was an "all else being equal" statement. Weight considerations are a separate matter. If you had two 10-pound suits of armor, one of which was [0, +20] and one of which was [20, +0], the second would be preferable.

Thanks. Those were very useful answers. Are there quests in Angband or is it pure dungeon crawl?

There are only two quests: kill Sauron on dungeon level 99 and Morgoth on level 100.

So I just cast a spell when I didn't have any mana. As a result my Constitution (and therefore my Hit Points) was damaged? Is this damage permanent? Can I fix it?

If the stat is yellow, then there are three ways you can restore it:

                        1) Gain a level. All stats are repaired when you gain a level.
                        2) Eat a Mushroom of Restoring. These will repair all your damaged stats. They're usually worth saving for later, though; a single point of CON damage is unlikely to be a major problem.
                        3) Cause the stat to go up (i.e. drink a Potion of Toughness, a Potion of Constitution, or a Potion of Augmentation, in order of rarity). Any time a stat is improved, it is first restored to full.

If the stat is still green, then the damage was truly permanent, and the only way you can fix it is to make it go up (item 3 above).

                          Another noob question - screenshots

Anyone know how to create a html screenshot to post on here please? FaA has a 'screenshot' option but this creates a .png file, which oook doesn't accept... Ta.

You can easily convert a png into a jpeg/jpg with just about any graphic editing program... "save as".

Yeah, but the Screenshots page here in oook requires html screenshots, I think?

I think in most variants that have them, you need to press ')' to save a html screenshot.

EDIT: Like this. It's a proof that FA has html screenshots. Hmm, I just noticed that when you select text in the screenshot, some squares turn from black into an unknown character. Does it spoil traps or some other terrain features???

You can show normal screenshots here using the [ img ] tag, but you need to have the image be accessible online, e.g. by uploading to Photobucket or some other image-hosting service.
