Well technically that's what zweihander means. To be fair, the shield slot is labelled as "on arm" not "on hand."

I guess we can add the word "usually" in front of requiring.

Yeah, "requring" is not how you spell that word.

Does it occurringly require two hands to wield?

Sorry, I just had to comment on this. Did anyone know that "occurringly" is not a word?

Two handed weapons should probably be changed so that no shield can be equipped while wielding one.

And I've always wondered how you could explain in Angband that your character can use a two handed sword, heavy crossbow and shield at the same time...

Reality takes a backseat to gameplay here. Angband is not designed to allow a player to ignore the shield slot. It's possible to make two-handed weapons negate an AC bonus while keeping resistances. That might be viable.

Ask Nick, I think FA already has this... IIRC you wear your shield on the back and get reduced AC if you wield a two-handed weapon.

In old versions you had "primary weapon" and "secondary weapon" and switched between them with "x". In order to shoot you had to move your bow to primary weapon which had some funny consequences (I have at least once killed Balrog of Moria by hitting it to the head with my bow). It also made choosing what to do a bit more complex thing.

IIRC in very old versions you didn't get any benefits from the other weapon either. (d*mn, old versions don't work with 64bit Win7, need to install Dosbox...)

Yep, from O - player keeps all resists etc, but armour class is reduced and no more shield bashes or deflection of missiles. In V as is it would be just the AC reduction, which is probably so minimal it's not worth the coding effort.

hmmm... in old versions you could also "bash" monsters causing a temporary stun if successful and if not in vanilla then some variant that also could push the monster back one step (if there is space). I think both of those could be (re)introduced in vanilla with shield bashing causing more damage than without.

IIRC in the oldest versions there was no secondary weapon slot; you just kept swap weapons (including your bow) in your backpack and hoped they didn't get burned or melted.

In frog-knows there is "spare weapon" equipment slot where you can put your main weapon with "X". You then swap between that and main weapon with "X", but you can't put it directly there from your backpack, you needed to first move your main weapon to spare slot in order to wield another weapon. Note that that spare weapon does not need to be bow, it can be other melee-weapon.

I don't know which version removed that, included a bow slot and included a macro for "x" to swap in weapon that had @x in it, but it was somewhere between frog-knows and 2.7.

It is possible that there was a brief time period where bow-slot didn't exist and spare weapon slot was removed (and had that macro to swap in spare weapon from your backpack).
