    in-game map is "squished"

Couldn't find the best way to explain this in the thread title.
When you use the in-game dungeon map, it works great for rooms, but it seems it wont display a corridor correctly. It displays the walls of the corridor with no space inbetween, making the map rather hard to read.

Is this something that different display settings can help fix, or is it just the way it is?

The map is compressed to fit on one screen, while the actual level may take up multiple screens. Thus your typical one-tile-wide corridor will be squished as you describe.
You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...
You are surrounded by a stasis field!
The tengu tries to teleport, but fails!

If you want to look at the map with more detail, use 'L', which basically lets you scroll your view about the dungeon.

... expanding upon what Dearkon posted,

Lower case L will let you look at what the game considers to be important, typically monsters, items and certain terrains. Follow that L up with a lower case O for free reign to look wherever you would like. If you've selected a monster, then pressing lower case R will recall everything you know about it.

Currently, walls have a higher priority than floors in terrain.txt. If you want to see rooms/corridors more effectively, increase the priority of floors in that file (the P line).
