    Request for enhancement (Large monitor support)

    There was another request just like it, however there wasn't much jabber about it. The only thing that came from it was a rumour that a patch exists, which allows support for high resolution.

    There are a few problems with that.
    1. Unofficial, if something goes wrong then you're on your own.
    2. It was for an older version of Angband.

    Some of us who play Angband have large monitors and would love to be able to take advantage of all that space. Even under Sangband which scales the map, there is a lot of wasted space.
    Is there any possibility of future support for large resolutions like 1920x1200?

    What exact kind of "large monitor support" do you want that isn't already in the game?

      As the patch was rendered irrelevant in V3.0.0 by integration. Just use a GUI port, then resize the window and adjust the font.

      Note that versions of V post-3.0.9 are slated to adjust area-of-effect detections to not react to the screen size, so that whole-screening the level won't convey the military intelligence boost it does now.

      You should be able to whole-screen a level with a noticeably larger font than 5x8. (Which is what I use to whole-screen at 1440 x 900, standard Windows build.)

        Integrated windows into the main window, however with the ability to set different panels around the main screen (Sometimes I like to play with widescreen, other times with long screen), currently you cannot do this because the other Term-X windows will simply disappear behind the main window.

          That doesn't sound like a problem with V so much as a problem with the (X-windows?) front-end.

          The layout you're suggesting sounds most like the SDL port.

            I'm running Angband on Vista, does X-Windows has Windows capability?
            Even if there was a way to keep those seperate windows "always on top", that would be lovely.

              Sorry, misread your comment. (X-windows is a standard *NIX windowing environment; x-window is the usual way of specifically referring to an X-windows window.) I'm on Windows 2000, but expect no differences between that and Vista.

              I assumed from your problems that you were not on the Microsoft Windows GUI port.

              My current layout for V is as follows on Windows. I'm targeting a 1440x900 monitor.
              * main window is barely large enough to wholescreen a level at 5x8 font. Top left corner is top left corner of screen. Do not maximize this window.
              * Term-1 is the monster list (lifesaver). 5x8 font. Positioned under main window to the left side so that when it goes under main only the title bar is hidden.
              * Term-2 is the compact player summary, in the default font size for V. It's to the right of the main window
              * Term-3 is Inven/equip, 5x8 font. It's positioned under the main window to the right so that when it goes under main, only the title bar is hidden. Positioned under main window to the right side.

              Key: arrange so that the only part of a term window that is hidden when the main window is on top, is the title bar. Window positions should restore correctly automatically.

                I have a WQXGA monitor (2560x1600) and one piece of large-monitor support that I would like is support for larger windows. Apparently, there's a hardcoded limit of 250 column in 3.0.9b. Is there any reason this couldn't be increased?

                  Why do you want more? The maximum width of a dungeon is #defined as 198, so 220 should be more than enough.

                    I guess the only reason would be to get more message text on the first line. But a better solution for that would be to allow more than one line of the window to be used for messages.

                      This is something I thought about a while ago; I even considered allowing a "message box" which could be separated from the map into another window (different from the message recall in that it only showed the current messages). I stopped thinking about it when UnAndrew did his easy_more option, which allows messages to overlap onto the map.

                      Any other opinions on all this?

                        That would be fine, too (it's pretty similar to permanently allocating more than one line). But it's not in vanilla?

                          No. AFAIK, it's in Unangband and FAangband.
