Question raises: how long has this been in the game? I never noticed that before.

Neither did I until today. I just looked up the history of target.c, and it was created on 31st Jan 2008 with this feature already in it, so I presume the code existed before that in a different file. So it's been around a long time.

Yep, it's been in as long as I can remember. It was certainly in O when I forked FA from it, which means it was in V2.8.3.

I knew about it all along, btw, and just assumed the devteam had worked around it somehow

That probably means that it got in with monster inventories, which was quite a long time ago. Nobody just mentioned it anywhere.

I'm not surprised- until the most recent nightly, you would have had to look-space at a creature that had stolen or picked up something.

Look-space is mainly useful on the rare occasions you want to know what a creature is standing on. A creature that picks up items isn't going to be standing on anything, because if it was it would have picked it up.
