    The one ring

    So I just found the one ring and I was wondering if when you find the "one" ring, do you automatically wear it.

    Background story: Current game I am cl50 dwarf pally. I have never had a lvl50 char before, never won the game and never found the "one" ring before. I have most resists covered etc. but simply don't have enough damage output against uniques yet. I have a glaive of slicing of acid and I can only do around 340 dam/rnd against monsters resistant to acid. So I don't know whether perma aggravation is worth it yet.

    To give you more background, I was fighting Haun and only got 2 stars off him and had to use !healing and !*healing* before I had to TO him away. I just couldn't harm him enough to risk being killed. I have killed a few high level uniques but some are proving too risky just yet.

    Should I just wear the ring and be done with it or keep it until I have a better weapon and can smash just about anything?

    On a side note. I noticed that the ring's unid description was "You see a gold ring". Is the one ring always coded to be the same color?

    No. It aggravates, so you need to be able to deal with that.

    Yes, but it's "Plain Gold", so you should have had "You see a Plain Gold ring" ...

      I can say that I got very disappointed the time when I killed Smeagol and he dropped a gold ring.

      Probably was a ring of searching or something like that.

        At your point of game, and your race/class choice probably yes (dwarf paladin has bad stealth). +5 to speed and all stats and all immunities/sustains is usually worth the aggravation, also with that on you don't have to worry about other aggravating things, just wear them if they benefit you.

        It is the point when you already *do* enough damage, have immunities and can fight things when The One isn't always the right choice.

        "A plain Gold Ring" I believe is the exact wording, and yes it is always that.

        You probably make more damage with good ego-dagger with The One than with that Scythe of Slicing you have, especially with extra blows one. Keep eye on Fury weapons, they are extra blows weapons that aggravate with huge to_dam bonuses

          Even with frost immunity, Huan is very tough with his other breath weapons and 8000 HP. A lot of breathers are somewhat less dangerous once you put a dent in their health bar, but he's still breathing a full strength through most of the fight.

          I'm not sure what your resources are, but if you had something that would do more damage to him, even something of Slay Animal, you might be able to carry it as a swap for taking him on.

          Also, as Pally, I would try to make sure that you're blessed when fighting him so that more blows will land home and that you use your own spells to heal when you're hurt, but not so hurt that a spell failure might be fatal.

            The One Ring is an awesome piece of gear; I'd say go for it. If nothing else, it's such a rare find (even these days) that to find it and then not use it is disappointing. Let it take your game in directions you wouldn't have otherwise traveled!

            Depending on the layout you're fighting in, you may be able to use Phase Door scrolls and then cast Heal a few times, instead of using up your potions. Destructed areas are great for that kind of setup since Phase almost always takes you out of LOS.

              I dont know how to make a character dump, since I haven't played this game for a long time, but here is the file. If someone else can make the char dump, that will help to shed light on my current situation. I would like to wear the "one" ring if for no other reason than it is the sole focus of game (Morgoth aside). I'm just not sure that now is the right time.

              As for the "plain gold ring" . I do remember that being the description, but when I typed it, it seemed strange. I mean I never see "you see a plain red potion", so when I typed it, I thought I had made a mistake and changed it to simply "gold ring". (I play this game very slowly and actually got the "one" ring days ago - 50 game turns/ 3 days) Thank you for restoring my faith in my memory.

              ok... i learned how to do a char dump, after unsuccessfully trying to attach the save file... and i can't seem to attach the dump file. Any technical advice is most welcome. Apologies for the noob issues. I should be able to post again in 21 hours from now. Thanks.

                There are two options:
                1) simply copy and paste your character dump into a comment (it's a text file). For bonus points put a [code] tag around the text. That will format it better.
                2) Upload a character dump to the ladder (see the link near the top of the screen).
                a chunk of Bronze {These look tastier than they are. !E}
                3 blank Parchments (Vellum) {No french novels please.}

                  I think I managed to do that. Thanks for the quick reply.

                    When asking for advice, it's common to post a link to the ladder:

                        You have telepathy, teleport other (paladins get this, right?), and plenty of teleport level scrolls. I say go for it.

                        Or maybe go for it next time you find a elemental dragon pit. The 4 immunities and the extra damage, along with paladin healing should make dragon pits a breeze. Clearing dragon pits should yield you a better weapon quickly, I should think.

                          Paladins get Teleport Other; it's in Ethereal Openings. Minimum 5% failure rate, of course, but that's still good odds. You should still carry scrolls of Destruction for when you absolutely positively can't risk another round of the current fight, though.

                            Why are you [and others] dissing his weapon? SoS with acid brand at max blows is a great weapon.

                              It's fantastic so long as the target doesn't resist acid. He could knock out Sauron no problem with that thing. Morgoth would be a bit trickier.

                              Do keep in mind that you don't need to kill anywhere close to all the uniques (unless you really want to, of course). I generally play until I'm powerful enough to beat Morgoth, and if he summons, then I deal with it -- most commonly by teleport other and destruction.
