      Um, I think one of the dev team did quite a lot of work on this a few months ago, including looking at making monsters track @ by open paths (i.e. not directly through rock) for the entire dungeon (or at least out to range 30, which IIRC is the max monster detection range). My initial thought is that it was fizzix, but since he's already replied to this thread I guess that can't be right. Maybe it was MarbleDice, and I have lost a year somewhere.

      There's an open ticket to look at monster detection and stealth (#1113), so there's definitely scope for changing the way it all works.
