    Vanilla Pseudo ID

To bring some life to this forum, here ist my wishlist for pseudo id in Vanilla.

This issue is beeing discussed every now and then on rgra. Pseudo id sucks, especially with rangers.
Instead of giving them strong pseudo it I would prefer a more sophisticated new system with strong pseudo for every class, but only for related items i.e.
missile weapons and ammo for rangers and rogues
weapons and armor for warriors and paladins
potions and mushrooms for priests and wizards

Staves, rods and scrolls are easy to identfy by using with only few possible bad side effects like summoning, really bad scroll ist curse weapon/armor, which ist native very deep in the dungeon and could be easy identified by that time.

Weak pseudo could stay at it is for other items.

How would a pseudo ID on potions and mushrooms work?

Perhaps they could be rated on smells or something along those lines.
I do agree that the ID should be tailored more towards the class you're playing at the time.

Something like "This mushroom looks dangerous" or about smells like Faust said.
Or simple as weak pseudo - good, bad (though in this case "bad" could also be useful but not consumable).

You've pretty much described the new Unangband pseudo-id system up until here:

          i.e.
missile weapons and ammo for rangers and rogues
weapons and armor for warriors and paladins
potions and mushrooms for priests and wizards

Staves, rods and scrolls are easy to identfy by using with only few possible bad side effects like summoning, really bad scroll ist curse weapon/armor, which ist native very deep in the dungeon and could be easy identified by that time.

The problem with your suggestion is that pseudo-id for mushrooms, potions, wands, staffs and rods pretty much fine.

For amulets, rings, where some can be good or bad: a pseudo of {good} and {cursed} is probably worthwile. However, if its a ring of speed, you'll id it anyway etc. So its probably not necessary.

For armour and weapons the current system is a pain.

Have a look at the Unangband class-based pseudo-id if you want.

Is the Unangband the variant I played where I totally hated the abundance of nearly useless types of identify scrolls? Stuff like Scroll of Sense Magic, which only gives you number of charges, etc...?

              Yep

I prefer the wording 'overwhelmed by choice'.

What about giving rogues the ability to pseudo-id rings and amulets as "cursed" or not.

Priests should be able to sense {cursed} on anything, due to the nature of their trade.

That does, however, make the spell remove curse useless...

No, it'd make whatever spell detects cursed status useless. If there's no such thing, then why worry about it?

                        Only if you're a priest.

Priests can effectively detect cursed stuff by throwing it on the floor and orbing it.

Which is sooo lame. Perhaps modify Orb that if you cast it on yourself, or you're in the splash damage zone, it destroys cursed items in your backpack?

I kind of like the idea of priests more-or-less instantly noticing curses, provided that curses aren't always on bad things. (Like having a (+2,+5) Flail cursed.)

That both makes curses more "interesting" and adds a quirk to the Priest class.
