How long to hold a scroll?

My comp. 97 warrior found a scroll of *Acquirement* on dl17... the question is, how long should I hold onto it for best value (i.e. I should wait until I get how deep before reading it)?

Tactically, you should sell it (assuming selling is on). The value in terms of gold of that scroll is far higher than the expected value of the items it can generate.

Fun-wise, I always read them immediately.

I'd read it straight away. If you plan to wait, take no chances on losing it to a fire attack. Read ?recall *right now*, store it at home until you get to dl20, then ?recall back and forth and read it the first turn you return to dl20.

Most likely you will get junk that will sell for a lot. The money will make a bigger difference the sooner you can spend it.

If you have not passed a 10K gameturn rollover [for store restocking] on your current trip, check the stores via '~' and see if there is anything gamechanging you could buy for the 30K you could presumably get selling the scroll.

Or whatever your storekeeper max is.
I thought scrolls/chests were locked to the level they were created on?
        Was that revoked?

Chests used to have a fixed drop depth, typically less useful than the level where you found them. That changed recently, to have chest drops based on how/where they were created, but I don't know if that was for 3.2 or not until 3.3.

Scrolls used to be where you read them. I don't know whether that was changed when chests were changed.

Acquirement still uses current level -- at least, it uses p_ptr -> depth, which I'm assuming is current level..

It wasn't. Chest drops were corrected in the last days before 3.2 was released, so you should no longer get rubbish from deep chests.
