    New 32x32 tiles

    I was playing Angband 3.2 with the 32x32 tiles, and noticed that some of the monsters (those numbered 559-565) were missing tiles.

    To help remedy this, I've created a few tiles with birds and bears. The bears are modified from the pictures at http://pousse.rapiere.free.fr/tome/t...terstiles.htm; the birds are completely original. The size and color palette matches that of 32x32.png.

    If one of the maintainers can incorporate this into the next version of Angband, I would be most appreciative!

    That's excellent work - thank you. We've actually just updated the 32x32 tiles in the latest nightly (thanks Buzzkill), but we'll check to see if there are any remaining gaps. More tiles are always helpful.

      As far as I can see similar tiles already exist (in both the bmp and png) and are properly documented in the prf file. Maybe it's just something that hasn't made into the main branch yet. IIRC though, these tiles have been around for a while.

      @juggle5, BTW, you're a very good artist. I've always felt that the felines and wolves could use some new tiles, I've just not the skill to make them (look good).

        64x64 Tiles?

        Outside of the art...what would be required to upgrade art to 64x64 art? If given the details I'd be willing to upgrade the art side.

        or is it possible to improve the quality of the 32x32? When I try to paste a new high quality image over the old one it degrades the quality to the point it isn't worth changing.

          Sweet-- all the tiles on that website are under the same licence as the ones currently in Angband. Can you confirm you'd be happy to licence your original creations under Creative Commons Attribution too? (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/)

            I would be happy to release these tiles under the Creative Commons Attribution license.

            @gnomewarrior: yes, I noticed the color degradation as well. My solution was to copy the palette from 32x32.png to my file, and then redo/fine tune the coloring based on this palette. If you copy the palette first, then you can save yourself some time.

                You sure those tiles are CC licensed? Dungeon Odyssey is actually a commercial game developed by Malfador Machinations... I know that David Gervais did create the tiles for that game, but I'm unsure as to whether he actually licensed them CC...

                  @Buzzkill:
                  Ask and you shall receive: here are some new canine icons. [Again, I place them under the Creative Commons Attribution license.] Here are my thoughts on which monsters go to which tiles, though I don't care that much how they are used.
                  1. Scruffy little dog
                  2. Jackal
                  3. Wolf
                  4. White wolf
                  5. Warg
                  6. Wolf chieftan
                  7. (free)
                  8. Werewolf
                  9. Draugluin, Sire of all werewolves
                  10. Carcharoth, the Jaws of Thirst
                  11. (free)
                  12. Huan, Wolfhound of the Valar
                  13. (free)
                  14. (free)
                  15. (free)
                  16. (free)

                  Unfortunately, I'll be going back to work next week, so I doubt I'll have time to make any felines--though I grant the current tiles look odd.

                  @ekolis:
                  The page http://pousse.rapiere.free.fr/tome/tome-tiles.htm says that all tiles except "Xerathul's Revenge" and are published under the Creative Commons license. To be clear, my bears are derivative works based on David Gervais's.

                    @Magnate: Assuming the dev team has no objections, I'll add these to the tile set and let you know when it's ready to go. It'll probably be a few days.

                    @Nick: ditto for FA.

                      Buzzkill, I can save you some work.

                      I downloaded the latest tile set from the nightlies and added my images. You'll still have to modify graf-dvg.prf. (My version is outdated now.)

                          I've done the prf work (still subject to testing). I've chosen not to change the highlighted entries as the scruffy dog graphic is fine, and I didn't want the wolf uniques to look like normal wolves. Haun (who's tile was just awful), is the exception that proves the rule.

                          I'll have to whole package up later tonight.

                            Buzzkill: sounds good to me. I also noticed that blink dogs and the two kinds of Hellhounds also could use updating; you could use the red and orange wolf icons for the hellhounds and green/blue/purple wolf icons for the blink hounds. I don't know if there are any other C's that need fixing.

                              Good call. I may re-color one of the scruffy little dogs an "ethereal blue" for the blink dog.

                              Argh! Staring at hex addresses gives me a headache.
