    What tiles do you use?

This is for tile users. I'm curious to hear whether anyone uses the old 8x8 tiles.

I'd tell you if I knew. I use the 32x32 tiles that come with the game. are those the gervais tiles? not sure?

I do think there's a bug in them somewhere though. traps frequently take on other tile gfx, almost as those there's some tiles missing.

    I mentioned it here.

I just use ASCII, tiles don't look right.

I use old tiles. I really like them.

There's a different character for each monster type and they are small and simple enough that you can see clearly what everything is when zoomed right out. I find the other tilesets far too busy.

I don't ever confuse one monster for another which seems to be a problem with the other graphical methods.

It's one of the reasons that I don't really play variants since I can never quite compute what is going on using just ASCII.

I voted ASCII, but not because it's my one true love... I just don't like the default tilesets for Angband - well, David Gervais' tiles are pretty good, but they're just so BIG, and Angband for some reason calls for more stuff to be visible on the screen than other roguelikes (Crawl, Nethack)... maybe dungeon levels in Angband are bigger (definitely bigger than Nethack, not sure about Crawl), or the GUI and text don't mesh up nicely unless the fonts are the right size, or something...

I use 32x32 for FA, but for V I use 16x16 since the 32x32 won't show some monsters at all.

I use ascii on my older computer which doesn't show tiles well, but when on a computer that shows them well, I use the old tiles (some of which aren't so old in DJA because I added them).
I like the 32x32 tiles, but I can't stand having so little of the dungeon map on the screen.

              My old variant DaJAngband:
http://sites.google.com/site/dajangbandwebsite/home (defunct and so old it's forked from Angband 3.1.0 -I think- but it's probably playable...)

I use 32x32 if I can. I tend to avoid variants that don't support tiles. ASCII just doesn't cut it for me.

Are you talking about koblod archers (and a few other) on a Mac system?

I usually don't like tiles, because it's harder for me to tell what's what at a quick glance. I just started trying Crawl today, though, and started on tile mode. Fun game.

I like ASCII for old-school goodness, but with solid walls.

Having started with Rogue, Larn, Moria, and (Net)Hack, I just wouldn't feel right about playing a Rogue-like with anything but letters & characters.

However, I do find that a lot of the colours really don't show up well on my screen. I would like it if there was some way to make characters more visible. I was looking at the screen-shots for ToME, and it looks like occupied squares are hi-lit at the corners. Something like that would be most excellent.

I use 32x32, sometimes 16x16 if I feel I need a bit more dungeon on my screen.

When I first got Moria on the Amiga it came with old tiles as default. I've used them ever since. I tend to play on a 4 inch PDA screen and they work well with that.

I use the old tiles EXCLUSIVELY. Just plain don't like the newer tiles, their colors, etc. If not for the old tiles, I'd probably play ascii.

the old tiles have great contrast. I found the others too subtle for me.

My only complaint is about black colored monsters. They don't show up well against black background on my tiny laptop that I use on the weekends - it's one part old laptop, one part eroding eyesight. [after this post, I took a look and saw that I could edit the .bmp holding the tiles, so I did some slight mods, like adding some lighter dots to dark creatures, adding a touch of green to open doors, red to closed doors, etc.]

                            ----------- edit -------------

Oh, but I fantasize about having a nicer pic or even rotating, moving 3d model that comes up in the Monster Memory views. Might be a nice fun project for someone. I could think of a few other advanced features to add, like using a richer window container (like browser window) with mouseover info events/windows, but that's just a lot of icing on the cake and would really bloat and complicate things if not done well.

For much the same reason as others mention: ASCII, so I can see more of the dungeon, and it's typically easier to differentiate things at a glance.
