Mage is the hardest class for the newbie, and it is pretty easy to lose on the first trip to bad luck, so that statement needs to be qualified somehow. I do agree with the sentiment.

It depends how you define "easy". I find priest easiest by far compared to any other class. It might not be fastest (that's probably a tie between warrior and ranger), but it definitely is easy class. Got hurt? Just heal up. Problem with heavy melee opponent? Use rune. Too many evil opponents in sight? Use banish evil. Something is annoying you? TO. Many things annoying you? *destruct*. A high level priest is borderline impossible to kill even with very bad luck.
