    Feature Request

When prompted for an item such as when you read a scroll of identify you have an option (ie keypress) to choose the FIRST VALID ITEM. (This is probably only really useful for identify)

Assuming a scroll of identify, the command would first check equipment, then your inventory, and finally the floor, identifying the first unidentified object it comes across.

Assuming the keypress '#', to mean select first valid item, you can then create a macro (assuming you've got Magic Book I&I inscribed {@m3}:
m3f# would identify the first unidentified object on, in, or under you.

Got a backpack full of unID'd items? Just spam that macro!

Simple to code and VERY convenient...

There maybe other uses for it.

Looking at get_item() theres a key (return key) to select the "default item", and it only works if there is only one valid item, maybe we could hijack that (pretty useless) option. (does anyone use that?)

In current FA with the 'show menus automatically' option on, Return will select the first item on the menu - I think that will work with a macro too.

S uses '.' for this (also targets closest visible monster when targetting). Any prayer of standardization across variants?

I don't mind posting bugs on trac, but not features. In this case, though, to me it seems a no brainer.

That is unless someone can tell me the usefulness of the current "default" action (return key) to select an object. (I've never used it and can't think of a scenario where it IS useful)

        Maybe I'm missing something.

Choosing first valid item form bunch of different places might not be a good idea. You might not want to use ID on armor in your backpack when there is a un-ID flavored item (like jewelry) onto floor. Especially if you don't have many ID left like using staves with low charge. You might even want to select which item to ID from any of those places.

I'd say this is pretty minor feature which I would not find much use.

well, I think he is suggestion that there is just a keypress to select a valid item. if you're very low on ID scrolls/charges then you'd not press that button, but select the item you want to ID.

ie to ID the first valid item would me "mcf#" and to ID a specific item on the floor would be "mcf-a". This assumes that # is the key to ID the first valid item.

it sounds eminently sensible to me.

Eh? It's not like you you have to use it. I would never suggest such a thing. Its an option(using a key) to pick the first valid item. It would not affect identify in any way from it's present behaviour.
