Umm, spells are ranged, and as such as has happened with archery tuning lately, that is an advantage. The disadvantages being less dmg/rnd and consumption of something (be it ammo or mana as in mana potions / staves of magi).
And don't forget, at end game with some farming you most likely end up with 3-4 staves of magi quite painlessly, giving nearly infinite mana anyways.

But rather than dwell on what mage/priest were designed for in the past (Globe of Invulnerability, melee was for mages too), I rather think of what happens currently when playing. Both styles are valid at the moment. The strengths and weaknesses are matters of contention not absolute, and thus I feel mage and priest are quite fine currently. For myself only the lack of end game farming ability with spells is hindering pure spellgaming for my chars.
