How exactly... does one properly emply a ring of delving..

    see... here's my confusion...

I have a shovel of digging that says it's +4 tunneling, and gives numbers of turns to get through various rock.

The ring of delving seems the same, it's +4, and gives a turn count.

So the question is, if I want the same +4, can I just ditch the shovel? When I then tunnel, will the +4 and turns given apply from the ring, and not the weapon I'm using - or - do I have to use a digger (shovel/pick) in order to get the ring bonuses?

The ring will work with any weapon. Wearing it makes any plain old sword dig as if it were a +4 shovel of digging. More importantly, it'll activate for stone to mud every once in a while. It's an almost always squelched item for me though. I think I've worn one once to break into a vault.

The ring adds digging power. You can use it with the shovel for even faster digging. Once you get to Str 18/70 or so, you can ditch both and dig [slowly] with your main weapon.

Looks like in 3.1.2v2 dwarves have digging bonus. They seem to be able to dig granite without problems with way less than 18/70 STR.

Yep, Dwarves have an inherent skill of 40 in digging. If I read the code correctly, that's equivalent to +2 on an item.

The turn count is for activation. (It activates for Stone-to-mud as well)
