    looking for consumables?

In my recent games, I have noticed that I have gotten lots of loot from deep dragon pits. Do not pass them up!

My most recent was a red dragon pit at DL 89. I don't know how likely it was, but there were no wyrms. If you want consumables, wyrms are bad, so that's as good as it gets. I have no idea what depth would be best to be searching out pits maximizing mature and ancient dragons and deep enough for best loot, but perhaps the 80s is the sweet spot.

From that one pit, I got 6 stat potions, plus 2 *!ENLIGHTENMENT [kind of count as 2 stat potions each], 2 !LIFE, several speed rings, !EXP, and ?banish. I also got a weapon of gondolin with ESP, boots of speed+10, bronze DSM, a few elvenkind armors, and a pointless artifact weapon. Even if I had only gotten half of that, it would beat most vaults.

That's pretty typical of my Green/Black/Red pits. whites and mh's often blow potions up.

If you double resist and take out the white dragon pit with _power, you won't lose too many potions to breaths.

Resistance of any kind does not affect potion popping in your inventory. The probabilities are based on pre-resistance damage.

(This is true in Vanilla, but not necessarily in other variants)

True, but you will survive and kill most before they breathe and kill the pots they drop

I typically lose no unsquelched dropped potions in a white pit. Most of your initial kills should be with dispel/power/holiness hopefully dropping at a safe distance from you. Then you retreat and kill and retreat again any time a potion you care about drops close enough to break if something breathes on you. You should be able to avoid picking up a potion or drop it and retreat, but if you have to you can always teleport away and return.
