    view_bright_light=no
    FWIW I have this set but don't object to eliminating it.

    From some quick testing it appears view_bright_light=no forces view_granite_light=no regardless of the setting. I changed my permanent wall color to the same gray as unlit granite because I didn't like a brown town so it is hard to tell the difference. I can change the permanent wall color to the darker gray. I assume it would be easy for me to create my own colors somewhere now?

    I suppose if these were all separate features (unlit floor, torch-lit floor, bright-lit floor) a real maniac could achieve her desired settings w/o the options (set them all white). But now I'm just causing trouble.

    I'm for eliminating options though. Just stating my current settings.

      I vote for the latter option, or just moving the item to the nearest empty square (maybe underneath the player?) when they cast the spell.

        d_m is simply running an informal poll to help discover which options actually are useless. I doubt any option will be removed if there's a single player here who says they use it.
        There's a difference between stuff that's genuinely useless and options that a given player does or doesn't choose to use.

        Options that are objectively useless should go, I agree. If there were an imaginary option that toggled something that didn't even exist in the game, like music or shaders, that would be objectively useless.

        The options being discussed in the thread are subjective though. They're a matter of taste rather than functionality. They all actually work, whether they're useless or not can only be decided from each individual player's POV. It's not a good idea to make assumptions about what other players will find useless, you can only put yourself in someone else's shoes so much. This thread proves that; the OP couldn't imagine people using certain options, but it turns out that they are used.

        Alongside this is that more people play angband than post on the board, and it's not possible to account for them here. Since the burdens of keeping the options are at most negligible (and new players usually have more pressing things to worry about than whether 'torchlite' is on or not ), it's better to keep the options than remove them.

            sorry to revive an old thread. But does anyone set the following option

            maximise effect of race/class bonuses to no?

              It can be useful when you feel that your race's stat penalties are worse than its stat benefits, especially if you don't think you'll be able to adequately make up for those penalties with equipment bonuses. In that case, you take a worse start for a better end. For example, a low-constitution race/class combo might turn off maximize mode so that they'd be able to get a decent hitpoint pool in the end.

              I almost always leave it on, but every once in awhile I'll turn it off. Typically in variants, but I could see turning it off for, say, a human mage.

              EDIT: to clarify, with maximize mode off, every stat caps at 18/100; basically, your race and class stat modifiers are applied directly to your base stats at the start of the game and are irrelevant after that point.

                I have used maximize off sometimes, for example troll mage.
