    That sounds to me more a variant than vanilla. IMO there's nothing wrong that every char has similar stats at the end because their gear is different because of the differences between chars. There are differences. Just not after you count CB+RB+EB.

    If you want more differences go back a few iterations of the game and remove some of the added bonuses items have. With current set of artifacts it is easy task to make everyone essentially warrior at the end of the game.

      Look at the end of http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthr...ght=sqrt+blows for my formula.
      I looked at your formula for a bit, and it seems impossible to get 6 blows per round.

      Maybe instead of.

      #blows = min { (5 + (STR^2)/40)/(3 + \sqrt(weapon weight in lbs))), (1 + (DEX/10)) }
      with +20% bonus for warriors
      we should use:

      #blows = min { (5 + (STR^2)/40)/(3 + \sqrt(weapon weight in lbs))), (CB+ (DEX/10)) }

      where CB = 2 for warriors, 1 for rogues, rangers, paladins, and 0 for mages priests.

      Unfortunately, this really hurts priests in the early game because they tend to have low dex, so you could replace the (CB + DEX/10) with max{ (CB + DEX/10),1} so in the early game they're limited from getting one blow only by their strength.

      Should this be in a new thread?

        I don't think I'd place the blame on the extra equipment bonuses that have been added recently. I'm quite sure I remember hearing about mages taking on Morgoth in melee (successfully!) in the period between the removal of GoI and the addition of the new items.

          Yes it was possible. I have beaten Balrog of Moria with my bow. In melee.

          Point was that they didn't have same set of stats back then. Not unless you played a long time to get all übergear artifacts there were.

          If you want to get mage being unable to use melee then this is even more a point for variant, not a vanilla.

            Do you mean to say that you beat the Balrog to death by whacking it in the face with Cubragol? Because that would predate the addition of the launcher slot, which IIRC was added in the 2.7 days, before GoI went kaput...

              Yes, not with Cubragol though. And not with GoI.
