    object list

just a request around the object list. I was wondering if there could be some segregation between what objects you can actually see, and what objects you're aware of via detection. much like the monster list does.

I've found myself wanting this as well. Yes please.

It'd also be nice if there were some way to zoom from the list to the object in question, but this is less important, especially if we end up nerfing object detection as was discussed (but not agreed on) in the "making the game harder" thread.

Yes. Like I could select it and it places my cursor on the tile in question. One of my biggest peeves is finding an object in a vault for of creatures with ESP. Which orc is sitting on the unidentified potion? This would fix that.

objects have their coordinates listed. You could figure out where the item is that way. It's a pain for vaults, but it is possible.

There was a discussion about making game harder where people seem to be liking the idea of reducing power of detection. That means that you could not look for details beyond what you have actually seen. That means that your "object list" would look like this:

A Small Metallic Shield [4,+10] (Identified)
5 Potions of Cure Critical wounds (seen, known)
          25 Arrows (seen, not identified)
          A shield (not seen)
          A bodyarmor (same)
          A bow
          A green potion
          A purple potion
          ...

Timo: sure, but that's orthogonal to this suggestion. If I poke my head into a vault, my character can see "Ahh, the AMHD is standing on that blue ring I noticed, which happens to be a Ring of Speed. Excellent." But all the player knows is that there's a blue ring that's actually a ring of speed, somewhere in the vault.

Even then, if I leave LOS (e.g. having to flee a fight) then there'll be a bunch of items whose types I know that aren't currently visible.

I was thinking it might work in the same way that the monsters list does:

              Code:
              You can see 3 items:
              a Mace (2d4)
              a potion of Restore Wisdom
              a Green Bubbling Potion

You are aware of 2 items:
              Arrows (1d4) (x34)
              a Pewter Rod
If we change how detection works then fine, but I think the above is still valid and enables you to work out when that prized item on the item list is something that's actually nearby or something that could be anywhere on the level. esp useful in vaults.

I'm not sure I think that this makes the game really any harder or easier. just a little more convenient and matches what seems appropriate from the characters PoV. also it matches consistency with the monsters list.

As I play with about 6 windows open, the monster and object lists are always on screen for me so this would make a difference.

Well, although unconvenient, you can (without using the coordinates in the new versions) use the (l)ook-command. Go through creatures and press enter on each. Then you can see what they are carrying and items they are standing on.

That's what I do today: hit enter a lot. If I have turns to spare I take the helmet off

Ah, I should have added an 'unless you already know this' of course.

Makes it too easy to go in, and grab the one useful thing out of the whole vault, and get out without risk.

Anything the character knows, the player should be able to easily figure out. The character knows where the potion is; the interface is preventing the player from finding it without a lot of tedium.

Besides, if your vaults are easy to sneak into and out of, then you're playing at the wrong depth.

isn't one of the tenants that anything the player could write down might as well be automated? the player could go through all the items and write down their location. this would just resolve that tedium. I don't think it's in any way game-changing, just an interface tweak that would aid the player in seeing what he can see, as it were...
