How else are you going to pick the right scroll out of your pack when you drop it in the dark?

Most flavors should be unnoticeable when blind. Can you tell the difference between gold and silver rings? How about green and blue potions?

However, that can easily lead to the fake difficulty of being unable to find the CCW potions in your pack once you get blinded. And should potions you pick up when blind not stack with potions of the same type that are already in your pack until you get unblinded?

          So making blindness realistic...
*You fumble in your pack for your potion of Cure Critical Wounds.
          *You feel a Scythe of Slicing 8d4 (+9, +8)
*You have been given a nasty cut!
          ****Low hitpoint warning***

And this is where I point out that realism and fun do not necessarily correlate, and that realism and Angband have very little to do with each other. Maybe if this were Nethack.

So, what's the gameplay benefit to be achieved by further penalizing the player for being blinded?

It adds flavor. It makes the game harder (more fun when you finally win). One could argue that careful placement would allow @ to find the proper ID'd item in his pack, even if he couldn't ID newly found flavors, even known flavors, while blind.

"Nith thir duin" happens to be an ancient NĂºmenorian spell, always written on papyrus.

I think there's a difference between stuff on the ground and stuff in your pack. Presumably @ has intelligently ordered his pack so he knows where everything is without having to fumble around. Even if @ has int 3, chances are she's smart enough to put the !CCW in an easily accessible place.

That's different with stuff that you find on the floor. That stuff shouldn't be known, and should be just 'a ring', 'a potion' etc.

HOWEVER, this seems like a lot of work for a very minor point that doesn't seem to affect gameplay all that much.

Exactly, and what would happen if you pick them up? Then they'd be in your inventory, but should they still be just "a ring" or "a potion"? And what if you pick up two scrolls of the same kind, would they stack before or after you regain your sight?

Besides, it's not like you could take much advantage from being able to recognize items on the floor while blind, if you get blinded in a bad situation you'll have other things to worry about than loot on the floor, and if you get blinded in a safe situation, you won't suffer much from not being able to recognize what's on the ground until you can see again.
