    Sauron optional?

On my ranger I just went to dlvl 99 and cast Create Stairs and it was a down stairs that takes me to Morgoth... did I miss something?

    r1967

edit: I just killed him and he dropped the staircase like normal, but I didn't have to.

Can you skip Morgoth this way too? Players could actually gain from doing so, as stuff like Wrath of God and The One Ring aren't native before level 100, and looking for them on that floor is probably a bit dangerous due to Morgoth's wall-eating ability (btw, from how far can Morgoth notice the player?).

No it's not working on dlvl 100. I'm going to try to find a trap door or other such avenue

Unrelated, but you reminded me, should scrolls of deep descent not be generated at DL 98 or DL 99?

I thought I could replicate this using debug mode, but currently it's not working for me, I get an up staircase every time. You said you were just on level 99, just cast the spell as normal, got a down staircase, right?

EDIT: Looking closely, it seems like the is_quest(lvl) function would have to misfire for this to work (or you'd have to have the "player depth" be 0). I wonder if there is some way for level 99 to be erroneously marked as "completed" without actually having killed Sauron.

I can't get anything to work to get past lvl 100 (as it should be). I don't know why it worked on 99. To be honest, I didn't even try to do it conciously; I actually was just diving to the bottom and all of a sudden noticed Morgoth in the room with me... I can't replicate it again; maybe just a fluke one-time thing.

I do have a penchant for finding myself in strange places like Nowhere Town.

Did you come back to lvl 99 and met Sauron again? You cast Create Stairs just after arriving lvl99?

I asked these questions because Sauron might got killed by other monsters while you were wandering/hacking/slashing through lvl99 (of course, by breathing attacks).

He was definitely still alive. I went back for him and killed him after I posted the first message just to make sure the monster memory log wasn't flawed.

Silly question but what variant are you playing - V or something else? The level mechanic might well be a bit different in FA/O...

It's the newest nightly version of V, r1967 I think.

I'm not worried about it if I and nobody else can recreate it. Just wanted to post in case others had seen it.

                      ditto that

Similar thing happened here. WORed from town to L99 and found the down stairs under me on arrival (Sauron still very alive). Did a similar thing into L100 and spent a while hunting around L101-109 - mostly taking out uniques and eventually getting The RoP(TOR) from Eol at L104 and PDSM (same level - lying on the floor).

Was the the nightly build? What version?

EDIT: I remember that an older version always placed down stairs below you when you recalled, but as far as I can tell that isn't happening in HEAD anymore.

Hm I wonder if my memory was faulty and that's how I got to 100.... it is possible the auto-placed stairs after recall was how.

Can you try replicating this again? If you don't want to mess with your current character you could use a new one plus debug mode to get to level 99 quickly:

                            CTRL-a + x = gain experience
                            CTRL-a + j = jump to level
                            CTRL-a + C = create artifact (10 narya, 11 nenya, 12 vilya, 13 one ring, 17 bladeturner, 60 feanor)
                            linux->xterm->screen->pmacs

It happened again. I just made a new char, did a debug mode jump to 99 and I was standing on a down staircase.
