Eddie has helpfully left out how to actually do this.

Hit { to inscribe text on your items. An inscription of "@m1" (without the quotation marks) means that, when you hit the 'm' key, at the prompt of which item to use, you can hit 1 to always select that particular item. So for example, if you're a mage, normally you could type "maa" to cast Magic Missile. But if you pick up a priest spellbook, suddenly it'll be taking the first slot in your inventory, so you'd have to type "mba" instead. But if you'd inscribed your first spellbook with "@m1", then you can always cast Magic Missile by typing "m1a" regardless of what your inventory looks like.

Similarly, @f1 lets you select the item when firing, @E1 lets you select it when eating, etc. It's most useful for spellbooks, rods, and ammo, in my experience.

I figure there must be a guide somewhere, but I don't know where it is.

You want to do the inscription through the object knowledge menus, not on the object directly, so that it is done automatically every time including future chars.

This is my current best, he is still alive and I think the eight level. I was just wanting tips on how to play it.

Also, how can I get back to town, I tried a scroll of Word Of Recall and go to town but once I got to town I tried to use another to go back to my deepest level but it didn't work.

What happened when you read the second scroll? It should have taken you back down to the deepest dungeon depth you've ever visited, after a short delay of course.

My screen, I guess blinked is the word, and then I was still in town. I checked my inventory and the scroll was gone.

There is a delay. If you are playing 3.1.2, it should say RECALL in white at the left on the bottom line to say it is waiting to take effect. If you read another before the first takes you away, it is canceled.

... also, if the read recall in town and then enter the dungeon via the stairs, the recall will take you back to town again.
