Maybe I'm mistaken, but there are lots of nasties in my character's monster memory that I've never met, like very OOD horrors probably lurking in Vaults I didn't find. As I have telepathy and detect rather often, it could be possible that their letters were visible for some single turn without me taking notice, but if that isn't the case, isn't it a bit unrealistic? I mean, you only learn about the attacks/defenses when you fight monsters, therefore you shouldn't learn about their existance before you see them.

Are you playing from an old competition save file? Some of them are created with large monster memories for fairness. Otherwise, you learn the basics about monsters from detection (speed, description, level.) You learn resistances and attacks by fighting them.

Nope, I'm not playing an old competition save file, and I have no ancestors either. Strange, I could almost swear I never seen some of the really OOD monsters that are in my monster memory! When I detect and see something unusual or potentially dangerous, I am quite careful to have a closer look (with the l key, not by walking up to it!). But maybe those Wyrms, Horned Reapers and whatnot were into my field of telepathy just one single turn or something.

Conceivably you could run down a hallway with telepathy and minimal disturbance options, and get close enough to them to ESP them in the middle but not be close enough at the start and end of the run, so that you did detect them but they were never on the screen when you looked.
