    Trouble with Sauron

Alrighty, I'm having a bit of trouble with sauron, for the most part if I get him down at all he just drains something from my pack and bang goes back up.

Should I just drop everything when If ight him? My -TO isn't reliable enough with him (rods, wands are fine.)

Also he seems to be able to take a huge chunk off my hit points, forcing me to heal while he keeps whacking me... at +24 speed, am I not fast enough?

Thanks for any help, below is a dump.

No way can you fight Sauron with 4 stacks of wands and staffs. With magic device 65, you should have an easy time activating the rod of speed. The staffs of healing are good for a backup, but there's no reason to carry them charged. In any case, you are much better off with a huge stack of !CCW.

    I recommend, strongly:
    30+ !CCW
    10+ ?Phase Door
3+ ?Recharging (for wands of Teleport other)

and go in with your wands at zero charges. (*Destruction* is useless vs Sauron, and Speed is only useful prior to melee and on recharging. You can leave your staffs of Healing and Speed in a safe place on the floor prior to the fight. Use ?Phase to escape for a breather to use them from the floor.)

Those numbers seem a bit low. I guess they make sense as absolute minima.

There's no point in going with fewer than 40 ?phase unless that is the difference between +20 speed and +19. Recharge occasionally fails, so I'd want more, but they can be a pain to collect. So what -- it would be a shame to squander the time you've spent so far because of unwillingness to scum the alchemist a few times. I'd say a minimum of 2 ?recharge for every item that you carry that can be recharged.

First attempt was going well until he summoned a ton of nastier uniques (all the undeads except tselaskus whom I killed). I ported them all away including sauron, then had to tele myself due to a few that I missed. Ended up killing Dawndeath who was the last unliving ringwraith.

Ended up ?tlevel due to fear of death as the level filled with greater demons and undead.

Second attempt I dug out a twisty corridor (not anti summon) and he filled it with greater demons. ?phased and ported, and when he was at 1 *, he ran. I recharged my _tele and ran after him.

Sauron dead, he dropped a bunch of ego crap.

          Any tips for M?

Edit: going to bed, don't want to play so close while tired. Gnight and thanks again pete! Your advice clenched the kill.

A bit OT but: Pete, you mention CCW potions... Has something about those changed in Vanilla since I last played it? Last I recall those were pretty useless at high levels.

In recent versons, they're more like half-strength !Heal in the final fight. (The way the % of healing comes out in practice.)

Using a ?Phase to break LoS and slamming several !CCW is very useful even at max level.

The best thing about !CCW is the store usually has them, so they're easy to farm and can't get drained.

Ah okay. I usually play ToME, and in my experience they're not too useful at high levels.

They heal 25% of wounds, or 125HP when down 500HP. It generally takes about 3 to put you back in the fight.

Must find a weapon to kill M... have umbar and holy might bolts, so at 700 a shot I should be able to theoretically do 14k damage.. counting on around 10k.

Need 20 speed, I might just whip him to death with gothmog as soon as I find some @#$^ing speed!

Gothmog isn't much good vs Morgoth. Your best weapon is the Glaive, although only 550 dam/turn isn't much in melee for a warrior. Those seeker bolts will certainly help.

Keep in mind that killing M takes a lot of supplies, especially in melee.
                        * Healing potions
                        * Full buffing (Overdoses of Hero, Chant, and possibly temporary fire/cold resistance before recalling to the dungeon.)
                        * Temporary speed from potions (scum level 1 if you have to.)
                        * Lots of phase door. Much more important vs M than vs S.

ToME CCW potions are still the old Vanilla-style ones, which IIRC cure something like 6d8 hitpoints or some other puny amount. They're basically worthless as far as restoring hitpoints is concerned. Vanilla C*W potions restore a percentage of your max HP (or is it a percentage of your lost HP?), which makes them much more useful (and has lead to some complaints that mages getting access to the CLW spell makes them overpowered, when previously it was completely worthless).

Yeah, but Gothmog actually did the job quite well.

I had 2 *Healing* and 6 life, and a bunch of ccw, and like 80 ?phase. Base speed of 25.

Started off looking around for M. Saw him coming, so I hasted and started shooting. He summoned so I to-ed him then blew up the summons. This continued until I ran out of ammo and blew up the stuff on the floor due to necessity, or ichy trigger finger, not sure which.

So this continued, then I realized M was up to 6 *'s from 2, and I checked previous and I saw he was draining my charges. *sigh* I teleported him and used my last ?recharge on my staff of speed, and blew all those charges to haste up before he got back. I proceeded to melee him to death after that.

Chugged 2 or 3 life at the last * just because I knew I would win and didn't want to risk anything. I know glaive would have been better, but for some reason I just like the idea of using Gothmog :P it is one of my favorite weapons.
