    Time On a Level

I'm not sure if my style has changed or maybe something in the game, but lately I find myself completely exploring levels and yet still feeling unsure about the next level when I go down the stairs.

I would think that the amount of turns needed to completely explore a level (meaning light every room and kill every creature worth my time) would be enough to warrant getting a feeling for the next level. But I find myself needing to rest a few thousand turns before going down stairs just to be sure. Is this just me?

Happens to me too, I generally don't explore the whole level, but I stick around long enough to get a feeling on the next one so I can see if it is worth exploring.

Although if you get "unsure about this place" that just means the level is pretty boring. "Looks like every other level" means you came down the stairs too fast.

I used to do this, but then I determined that level feelings really had little correlation to whether or not I wanted to explore the level. Now I guess I explore about 20% of a level before leaving it.

It takes 1000 game turns (= 100 normal speed player turns) for feelings to "recharge". Unless your character is insanely fast (speed +100 or someting ) it shoudn't take thousands of player turns.

"Unsure" is one of the [maybe new] level feelings.

"Looks like any other level" or something similar is for not taking enough time on the prev level.

The "unsure" feeling certainly didn't exist back in the 2.8/2.9 days of Vanilla. I don't know when exactly it was added but that's recent enough to qualify as "new" for me.

              Level feelings aren't useless.

Even on levels, tho, with ambivalent feelings messages, don't forget that uniques in-depth don't add much, if anything. Yeah, the little leprechaun that sits on my shoulder and whispers "ohhh laddie ye're feelin a bit lucky"...only to have the Witch-King, Glaurung, Ancagalon, and Pazuzu *all* show up...lucky. Right. Not the word I'd use.

And depending on depth, some things that are probably not 'interesting' can be quite useful. An orc pit on L32? Decent chance of getting a couple stat boosters.

What I'll do on boring levels, assuming I'm comfortable on my current level and intending to continue on down, is a quick, broad sweep, especially if I have !Enlightenment or Magic Mapping to accelerate things, is sweep around to check I'm not missing anything useful. I'll also skip boring levels if there's something like a pack of nasty hounds that I just don't want to mess with. Animal, jelly, and undead pits may be the same.

As far as I can tell (as a noob who hasn't played earlier versions), the "unsure" feeling indicates a 100% average level. Something in between "quiet and peaceful"/"uninteresting" and "a little lucky."

The only message you ever get for going down too fast is "Looks like any other level."
