haha well... I reinstalled my OS and reinstalled Realtek drivers for sound, and apparently I have sound now within Angband. However, it appears to be very limited. Like, I only get a few sounds playing.

Also, if I use the sound system that comes with Angband, I appear to get no sound or very little. When I put in the extra sounds, I get SOME sounds.. but like, I'm missing all the store sounds and hit sounds against monsters. It's weird.

It seems that I don't get sounds when I go into stores, go into my home, etc...
yet, the config file refers to sounds I have, and the sounds are present in that directory.

I also don't get hit sounds when I hit people like I should.

      I got my sounds from:

Are there better sounds somewhere else?
Maybe the config file is wrong?

Here's a small screenshot of part of the file.
Some of these wavs aren't played, even though they exist and are referenced correctly, like the entering the store, your home, leaving a store, and hitting a monster...

I'm wondering if the on-board sound on my EVGA X58 is just not good enough to play enough sounds at once or what not.

What's weird is that I get all sounds active when I play ZangbandTK just fine.
I wonder what's different between the two insofar as the sound system goes.

          Yeah... it is.

I was running an earlier version under Ubuntu Linux (v9 Karmic Koala) and sound worked perfectly. When the updated package downloaded as part of the 10.04 Lucid Lynx update, the sound stopped working. System sounds are fine - only Angband.

Not just I like hearing the screams, but it's nice to not have to watch in two places to have an idea what's happening. Really want the sound back.

Well you'll need to wait until I get around to this. The sounds were removed from the Debian package of 3.1.1.1626 because they had no licence, and all "free" software in Debian must have a DFSG-compliant licence (no licence is not compliant). Ubuntu simply takes Debian packages as-is, so the sounds disappeared in Ubuntu as well.

I will be packaging Dubtrain's much improved sounds some time around 3.1.3 or 3.2 - in the meantime you could just download them yourself (google for "dubtrain angband sound pack") and install them manually.

I think Magnate's answer has made the question irrelevant anyway
